Apple is all about staying on top of the heap of innovation, whether it’s their products’ designs, their iOS and MacOS operating systems, or their apps. The Cupertino-based company is now wanting to branch out into your entire home with their new Homekit app.

HomeKit allows you to connect compatible devices to its own interface and control things like light, your thermostat, and even your water sprinklers from your Apple device. In some cases, you can even control the devices via voice using Apple’s AI assistant, Siri.

Although HomeKit was announced at WWDC in June 2014, it’s still not widely talked about by Apple or the company’s consumers, and many are unsure of what devices they can use with the app. Here are some examples of devices – some for productivity, some for fun – that are compatible with the Apple HomeKit.

Honeywell, a company that has been a household name since its expansion in the 1920s, is one that jumped on the smart-home bandwagon early on.

August Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock is a replacement for your old key-and-lock system for your front door. It creates a unique ID for everyone in your home and uses the iOS and Apple Watch apps to unlock the door when the person reaches the vicinity.

August also records who leaves and when for more security, and alert the account owner every time the door is unlocked. The Smart Lock goes on the inside of your door and the exterior lock stays the same, offering maximum discretion.

iDevices Switch

The iDevices Switch by iDevices allows you to use your HomeKit App to switch between all of your connected devices throughout your home. By simply connecting the Switch to your home’s Wi-Fi, you are able to take advantage of its features.

The Switch can also be controlled by voice commands using Siri on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You can set ‘scenes’ with the Switch, which are like profiles for certain rooms, time of day, etc. For example, you can say “Hey Siri. Turn on my playroom scene.” This command might enable the lights in that specific room, or whatever setting you have under that ‘scene.’

Elgato Eve Weather Wireless Outdoor Sensor

HomeKit has been proven to be compatible with a lot of devices that are ideal for collecting data from its surroundings. The Elgato Eve Weather Wireless Outdoor Sensor is on that list. The sensor is placed outside and runs off long-lasting batteries (no cords!), so you can place it and not worry about the device itself – everything you need will be on your iOS-powered device.

The sensor records data such as humidity, air pressure, and temperature so you can plan for your day without even having to look outside. Apple is aiming to help the average consumer experience an almost-entirely wireless home with HomeKit. As long as there are companies willing to be just as inventive, we will continue to see a rise in the use of these smart-home gadgets.
