Definitely, voice acting is one of the most exciting and amazing careers available today, especially so, when you consider the diverse range of clients, the flexible work hours and the ability to work from home. Setting a small home-based recording studio is becoming a mandatory step towards success. If you are freelance voice talent with easy access to record anytime is essential to being successful in the modern age of voice acting. Thanks to the growing availability and use of in-home recording systems and technology, voice talents are now, and have been able to do for much of the last decade, produce broadcast-quality audio recordings from the comfort of their own home studios. The quality of the recordings is also on-par with recordings done in much more elaborate recording facilities. A professional talent uses a high quality microphone, digital audio recording software and work from an acoustically treated room. One of the interesting advantages of being a Voice-Over artist is that you have the option of working from home. As technology has become more advanced and cheaper to deploy setting up a recording studio at home primarily aimed at voice recording is a definitely possible today. Here is a list of what you will need while building a home recording studio mainly to record Broadcast Quality Voice-Overs: 1. A PC or a Mac. 2. A Microphone. 3. A Sound Proof Dead Room. 4. An Audio interface that acts as the bridge between your computer and the microphone. 5. Recording Software for your PC or Mac also known as a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). 6. Headphones. 7. Studio Monitor Speakers (Optional) 8. Control Surface for your DAW (Optional) 9. A quite room preferably a basement. 10. High Speed Internet access. The above list can cost anywhere from between US$2,000 to US$20,000 and maybe beyond too. It actually depends on your application. If you are building a studio to primarily record Voice and are going to do very little audio mixing or post work then you can get away by spending much less. On the other hand if you are planning on producing sound for the latest movies from the comfort of your home then maybe you will need a little something more spectacular in terms of the gear you use. Having said that there are some minimum requirements that you will have to meet. The critical elements or key components of your studio are the Microphone and the Audio Interface. These will dictate the quality of sound that is recorded and one should not compromise any day in this area at all if you are serious about working from your studio. The one other important equipment is Soundproof Dead room. Soundproof so that all outside sounds don’t make it to your recording and dead meaning that all the sounds occurring within the room get absorbed by the walls and don’t bounce back into the mic creating disturbances. This room is also called an Isolation Booth. The isolation booth is what helps your recording stay clear and free from environmental sounds making it sound proof. PC or Mac: The choice is surely yours. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Most mainstream DAW’s have both Mac as well as PC versions of their software. Some even don’t and there that may determine what platform you end up with. In India per say PC’s are more prevalent but Mac support is getting even better. This is the key item that your complete studio will be built around and in most cases the single most expensive bit of kit in your Home Studio also. The standard in most voice recording facilities around the world has been Neumann. They are not cheap but you get surely what you pay for. There are other makes like Focusrite and Presonus too. The Isolation Room: Now that you have to bring home a good Microphone it’s time to plan to build a proper house for it. A soundproof chamber with sound absorbing walls on the inside, can be made of wood or concrete is a good option. You can also convert a small existing room into a dead room by adding rock-wool panels on the inside walls and ceiling. Starting by using the quietest portion of your house will probably be a good start in getting this room right. Sound is sometimes tricky. It always seems to make its way in somehow! Audio Interface: Generally a little box or a mixing console that acts as a bridge between the computer and microphone. Here you have a variety of products to choose from. Mostly the DAW you use will dictate the choice of the Audio Interface too. Many products come as bundled packages too. The interface is uses either as USB or Firewire technology to connect to the computer. High-Speed Net Access: On the Internet, distance is nothing. To work from home all you will require is a broadband connection of at least 256kbps for file transfers back to your clients. A faster connection will be required if you plan to use emerging technologies like the Source Connect plug-in that also allows real-time Voice-Over recording over the internet making dependence on technologies like ISDN a thing of the past. Just because you have a studio at home does not mean that it’s amateur or will not meet broadcast standards, if you use the right combination of good quality gear matched to what you really want to accomplish most people can build a high quality-recording studio at home also.
