Like any part of your body surface, a Skin rash may occur on the palm. Commonly,  the palm is an affected site as is the entire hand. Because the hand makes contact with the environment throughout the day, it faces repeated insults that may result in a rash. However, rash on the palm can be caused  due to skin diseases that can affect any part of the body.

What is a palm rash?

A palm rash is any lesion that located on the inside part of the hand. Generally, rash  is a broad term that describe abnormalities of the skin including roughness, dryness, peeling, redness, swelling and fluid-filled vesicles or pustules. These rashes can be itchy lasting only a few minutes or hours and resolves.

What’s Causing Palm Rash?

Rashes occur due to different reasons, from injury and infection to allergies and autoimmune diseases. Sometimse, rash occurs on palms for specific reasons. At other times, a rash on the palm occurs as part of a widespread  rash affecting various parts of the body due to a certain condition.

Dry Skin

Skin dryness is a common problem that may affect the palms. Dryness can be easily relieved with moisturizers and proper protection; however, it can progress to the cracking and peeling. Scratching will worsen it as the skin is damaged and therefore cannot retain its natural moisture.

Trauma (Injury)

Injury to the palm can commonly arise with physical, chemical or electromagnetic trauma. There are many common physical injuries including a laceration, contusion or burn. Moreover, the Exposure to toxic chemicals like pool acid may cause chemical injuries.The severity of the injury depends on the nature of the trauma, duration and intensity.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is one of the most common types of skin rash that occurs when the skin comes into contact with substances that irritates the skin or triggers an allergic reaction. People who are repeatedly exposed to chemicals and various other substances have the highest chance to get this type of rash. In addition  water, soap and perspiration can  irritate the skin.

A dishpan hands is a common type of contact dermatitis that affect the hands. It develops due to the repeated exposure to detergents and water. Only in people who are hypersensitive, certain chemicals, metals and substances usually cause allergic contact dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a common skin condition that seen in children. Atopic dermatitis occurs in children with disposition of a hypersensitive immune system. Also, it  may occur along with allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis. The skin becomes dry, cracked, itchy, red and swollen.

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis

Dyshidrotic dermatitis appears as ting blisters on the skin, specifically on the hands and feet. The main cause of this condition is still unknown.  However, it is linked to prolonged fungal infections of the feet, drug hypersensitivity, allergies and emotional stress. The rash is itching and scratching may cause these tiny blisters to burst and ooze a clear discharge.

Ringworm

A ringworm infection of the hand occurs when a fungi infect the skin. The main type of fungi that infects skin is known . Ringworm forms a red ring-like lesion. The rash itself is red and itchy and the center of the lesion may have normal skin. Tinea nigra is a certain type of fungal infection that affects the palm and soles. It is an uncommon fungal infection. It makes the affected skin dark brown to black in color.

Impetigo

It is a bacterial skin infection that usually arises with a break in the skin and entry of the bacteria into the underlying tissue. It can be severe and require treatment. This condition causes red sores on the skin that may burst to yellow crust. The infection may extend deeper into the tissue and then spread along the arm or even beyond.

How to Treat Palm Rash?

The treatment of rash on palm of  hands depends on the underlying cause. Some rashes will not require any treatment that can simply be resolved on its own. Sometimes, you  need to use topical applications or oral medication; for example, you may need some of the following:

– Barrier cream:  it prevents dehydration and protects the skin.

– Emollients: it relieves dryness and moisturize the skin.

– Antibacterial applications for bacterial infections.

– Antihistamines: it relieves itching and reduces allergic reactions.

– Corticosteroids: reduces inflammation and suppresses immune activity.
