Interview with Padma Yogi

My name is Melissa, owner of Padma Yogi.
I often get asked questions during my teaching and work as a birth doula. Here I answer the most common ones.
What is Padma?
Padma is my business name which is short for Padmavati. I am a classical trained hatha teacher though the Sivananda lineage and as part of my training, students had the option of requesting a spiritual name. Mine was given to me by Swami Brahmananda. Padmavati translates to keeper of the lotus flowers.
Do you have children?
I get asked this question from time to time. I don't have children of my own. I have been open and honest with my personal health struggles with cervical cancer and endometriosis and although, not ruled out, it will be challenging and difficult for me to conceive and carry to  full-term.
How can you teach Prenatal Yoga when you don't have children?
This question usually follows, the do you have children one. I often respond do we ask male doctors, gynecologists or obstetricians the same thing? How can they treat women, when they don't have the same anatomy. I truly believe that one doesn't have to live the same experience to feel and act with compassion, empathy and kindness.
Why did you then specialize in prenatal?
You could say that once I hit my mid-thirties my clock began to start ticking but after teach various styles of Yoga, I felt a pull into the prenatal direction. I completed a 100 hour prenatal yoga training and began teaching to pregnant women. Although I only see students for a short period, some a few weeks others for most of their pregnancy, it brings me great joy to be able to share in this experience and to give back to them by providing a safe space where women can unwind and let go of all the demands of every day life.
Why should students go to your classes over someone else's?
I am a registered prenatal yoga teacher which means that I have met the requirements laid out byYoga Alliance. I am also a birth doula, trained byDONA. In my classes, I combine my various yoga trainings with my work as a doula. I have invested in myself and meet the highest standards currently available for prenatal yoga teachers. Students practice in a safe environment, knowing that they can trust an experienced and educated teacher.
Padma Yogi currently teachers prenatal yoga classes in South Etobicoke, west of Toronto. Please visit herwebsitefor more information and to register.
