Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in women’s life. Finding out you are pregnant is one of the most exciting and daunting times of your life, even if you have been preparing for it for some time. Get ready for the rollercoaster ride of pregnancy on the road to parenthood. Your pregnancy will be a special experience no matter if you’ve been through it before, or this is your first time. The thought of growing a baby inside your body until it is ready for independent life may sometimes become almost overwhelming. Joy, relief, excitement and fear are common emotions which can come as quickly as they go. Although at first, forty weeks can seem like an eternity, for most women it goes by pretty quickly.

The next 40 weeks of your life will be an amazing time. You may face pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness, frequent urination, fatigue, mood swings, food aversions and more. Most of pregnancy symptoms are caused by hormonal changes and the extra strain your body is under. They are usually temporary, cause minor discomfort and can be treated simply. Extra care needs to be taken by women during pregnancy.

Most pregnancies will continue without any problems at all, however, a small percentage of pregnancies suffer from complications. Pregnancy is a time when a female blossoms into a woman and waits for her turn to become a mother. It enriches a woman with an experience never felt before and prepares her to tend for the new life growing inside her.

There are few experiences in life as powerful as finding out that you’re pregnant. It’s amazing to think that you have a new life growing inside you. From the moment you begin to feel changes in your body or you know for sure that you’re pregnant you may begin to feel protective and look forward to having the baby. You can feel wonderful during your pregnancy if you take good care of yourself.

Increase your odds of a healthy pregnancy by following these pregnancy tips to keep yourself in top condition:

  1. Eat five or six well-balanced meals each day. Remember to eat healthy always. Make sure your meals are balanced and nutritious. Avoid uncooked food, even salads, and ensure that your food is hygienic. If you have a sensitive stomach, avoid eating outdoors. Constipation is very common during pregnancy due to the hormonal changes. Make sure you eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and fibre laden food such as whole wheat or multi grain breads.
  2. Take a prenatal vitamin each day as directed by your obstetrician. Iron keeps your blood healthy. Folic acid helps prevent some birth defects.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids at least eight to 10 glasses a day avoiding caffeine and artificial colouring. Too much of coffee is not good but that does not mean that you should deprive yourself of your regular morning cup. Decaffeinated tea and coffee, fruit teas and fruit juices are all safe alternatives.
  4. Don’t drink alcohol. If you do decide to drink, stick to no more than one or two units of alcohol, no more than once or twice a week, and never get drunk. Drinking heavily or binge drinking during pregnancy is dangerous for your baby. Mums-to-be who drink heavily on a regular basis are more likely to give birth to a baby with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). These are problems ranging from learning difficulties to more serious birth defects.

  1. Don’t smoke or allow yourself to be exposed to second hand smoke. Smoking during pregnancy can cause serious health problems, for you and your baby. These risks include an increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and may even be associated with the loss of a baby at birth. Smoking makes the pregnancy complications like Nausea and vomiting (morning sickness), ectopic pregnancy and placental abruption, where the placenta comes away from the uterus wall before your baby is born more likely.
  2. Exercise -it’s important for your general health and also can help reduce stress. Take a pregnancy exercise class or walk at least fifteen to twenty minutes every day at a moderate pace. Walk in cool, shaded areas or indoors in order to prevent overheating. It can lessen the discomfort and fatigue.
  3. Get adequate sleep, at least eight hours a night. If you can’t sleep at night, try to take a quick nap in the middle of the day to catch up. If that’s impossible, at least put your feet up and try to relax for 30 minutes and see your physician for advice. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, stretching, deep breathing, and massage are all great ways to combat stress and get a better night’s sleep.

  1. Wear comfortable, non restricting shoes and put your feet up several times a day to prevent fatigue and swelling of the feet, legs, and ankles.
  2. Continue to wear a safety belt while riding in motor vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the shoulder portion of the restraint should be positioned over the collar bone. The lap portion should be placed under the abdomen as low as possible on the hips and across the upper thighs, never above the abdomen. Also, pregnant women should sit as far from the air bag as possible.
  3. Don’t take over-the-counter medications or herbal remedies without first consulting your obstetrician or midwife.
  4. Monitor your pregnancy. Go for your scheduled medical checkups and scans regularly. Tell your doctor if you observe anything unusual, such as spotting. Make sure you take all the multivitamins and tonics that are prescribed by your doctor.
