Moisturizer or Serum?

Moisturizer or Serum?

Moisturizers and facial serums are both important components in a healthy Skin regime, but it can sometimes be difficult to tell the two apart.

What is moisturizer?

A moisturizer prevents dryness of the skin. It seals in moisture (hence the name) and keeps the skin soft and elastic. It is easily absorbed by the skin’s outer layers. A good moisturizer won’t make your skin greasy, but it will protect against a low-humidity atmosphere and give your skin a silky feel. It normally works very fast. You apply moisturizer after the shower,  before going to bed, and at the start of your day (twice a day).

What is facial serum?

A facial serum is an oil-like substance enriched in nutritional elements. It is a thinner consistency than moisturizer and contains anti-aging ingredients. While it can also help retain moisture, the main reason you would use a serum is to lessen the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles. There are more varieties of facial serum than moisturizer. You apply serum after your toner and before your moisturizer.

Which one is right for me?

If your skin is happy with moisturizer, then don’t feel you need to switch to an expensive serum. Serums usually won’t hydrate your skin any better than a cheap moisturizer. But if your goal is to banish early signs of aging or give your complexion a nutritional boost, then there are some great skin products out there – like Kaunis’ very own Soothing and Anti-Aging Face Masks.
