How to Take Care of Your Hair & Nails
With 9 pounds, 2 square yards, and 3 trillion cells, the skin is the body’s largest organ – which makes it easy to forget about protecting and caring for your Hair and nails, too. Not many people realize, but your hair and nails are just modified forms of skin. Hair grows everywhere on the human body except the lips, eyelids, palms and soles of the feet. Nails protect the sensitive tips of your fingers and toes. Both are an indicator of a person’s general wellbeing – e.g. if your hair is falling out and your nails are brittle, you’re probably sick or stressed out.
While caring for your skin can often seem like a long and arduous battle, the hair and nails fortunately don’t require as much attention. There are a few simple things you can do to keep them in tiptop shape and looking au naturel.
- Wash 2 – 3 times a week. You don’t want to damage or dry it out by washing too much.
- Use conditioner. Many products contain ingredients which moisturize and strengthen your hair.
- Don’t pull on your hair. Pulling can cause breakage.
- Trim regularly (about every 6 – 8 weeks). It gets rid of split ends.
- Abstain from dye. It can dry out and weaken your hair.
- Don’t bite, nibble or pick at your nails. It leaves them jagged and weak.
- Length is fine, but if your nails are starting to look like talons, cut them down. They will likely break otherwise.
- When you use moisturizer for your skin, rub some into your cuticles and nails as well.
- Acrylic nails can sometimes lead to infection. As long as they are put on properly, you shouldn’t have a problem.
- Apply a tough varnish or nail hardener to protect your nails. Some polishes do this anyway.
