I’m not the type of person who makes ‘resolutions’ at the beginning of each year, but this year feels different than previous years.
This year, I’m giving myself one year to start a new blog, and build it to $100k in revenue in 12 months.
Let me give you some background;
I bought the domain for this blog (the one that you’re reading right now) sometime in late 2016, but didn’t actually do anything with it until September of 2017.
At that time, I built the blog, and started doing what most other bloggers recommend you do to generate traffic to a new blog. I created a Facebook page, bought Facebook ads, , contributed my blog posts to that page, and boosted ($) what few posts were on it, etc.
Facebook was a complete waste of time.
I spent what felt like an eternity (and a small fortune) building, posting and boosting, all to absolutely NO avail. Facebook’s algorithm doesn’t allow any kind of meaningful traffic to blog content that you post on your page, so this blog got VERY little traffic from Facebook.
So 7 months later, in May 2017, frustrated with the whole damn thing, I gave up. I closed up my laptop and I walked away.
I stayed away for 6 months.
At the end of the 6 months (April 2017-ish), I started to miss writing for the sheer sake of writing.
The damned thing was calling me back.
So I dusted off my bruised ego from my last failure, and signed back into WordPress.
I buried myself in SEO research and testing. I tinkered with which social media vehicles are actually worth a fly’s ass when it comes to generating traffic for my blog, etc. (what I learned and experienced with ONE of those platforms shocked the hell out of me…)
I did it all. And low and behold, one day about 2 months in, I saw it; TRAFFIC!
It wasn’t huge at first, only about 40 or 50 page views for the first couple of weeks. That was all I needed!
I had enrolled in Google’s Adsense program, and with that teeny tiny bit of traffic, I was seeing pennies a day in ‘ad revenue’ (it’s in quotes because pennies can hardly be called revenue, but I was STOKED!)
It wasn’t the thou$ands of dollars a month that some others are making, but it was a start
So I decided to keep going. I focused on writing good, helpful content, and growing my daily, weekly and monthly page views.
Steadily, those page views grew. They grew to the point where I could shed Adsense’s pennies a day model, and enrol my blog in a ‘better’ (higher paying) ad network.
Then one day, I checked my Google Analytics and saw a huge spike in my traffic! The spike topped out at 1400+ page views a day!
Fourteen hundred page views a day might not sound like much to the ‘hot shot’ blogger. But for my little blog that was only getting 40 to 60 page views a day, this was a BEAST!!
As it turns out, I started testing Pinterest for traffic, and one of my Pinterest pins landed near the top of the feed for its keyword phrase, and that caused the spike, which lasted about a week.
Once I’d figured out how it worked, I needed to replicate that process.
This blog now gets much more than the 40 – 60 page views a day that I was previously getting. It’s also making a lot more than the pennies per day that it was making back then. It’s not in the thousands per month that some others are making, but it’s coming
That said, I’ve started another blog, so that you can follow along with it’s growth from scratch.
My biggest blog (the one you’re reading now) is a lifestyle blog. Which means that it doesn’t focus on one topic. This is THE most difficult kind of blog to monetize and generate traffic for with regard to SEO.
So with that in mind, the new blog is more hyper focused. I’ve chosen to focus on personal finance for the next blog.
The new blog is called The Budget Diva. It’s only a couple of months old. All I’ve done so far is build it, and I created an email newsletter account for it. In addition, I’ve created / written about 12 posts as well.
I’ve also created a Pinterest account for the new blog. I won’t be torturing myself with Facebook or Twitter any time soon. Both have proven to be useless in my testing.
I’m going to grow the new blog to $100k in revenue by January 1st, 2020. I’m also going to tell you every thing I do, whether it works or not, in getting to that goal.
