What is a Portable Aromatherapy Diffuser?

With the success and widespread reach of e-cigarettes and vaping, it was only a matter of time before other industries started to incorporate the same functions and technologies into their own products. Portable (or personal) aromatherapy diffusers are one example.

If you’re into aromatherapy, or if you just love using Essential Oils, you might have noticed that portability has never been an offered feature. Aromatherapy usually involves sitting in a bath tub, setting up a facial steamer, burning candles, or all of the above!

And you usually need the privacy of your own home – so portability is a much welcomed feature!

What is a portable aromatherapy diffuser?

A Portable Aromatherapy Diffuser is a lot like an electronic cigarette, or a “vape”. They work in much the same way, but whereas e-cigs vaporize propylne glycol or vegetable glycerin (and nicotine), a portable aromatherapy device vaporizes (usually a blend of) essential oils.

Many people like to utilize essential oils when relaxing, or using their facial steamer at home – it really is a great way to relax. Portable aromatherapy diffusers let you enjoy the benefits of steam infused with essential oils, without having to sit in one place, or set up dedicated machinery.

Like an e-cigarette, or a vape, they are filled with a liquid – in this case essential oils. And when you draw on it (think of puffing on a cigar or a cigarette) it produces a mist which you breathe in through your mouth.

Sometimes you’re tired at work, and wish you had a little “pick me up”. Or maybe you’re stressed at the office, and need to relax. If essential oils are your go-to in these types of situations, a portable aromatherapy diffuser can be quite convenient!

What do they contain?

They will usually contain different combinations of essential oils, each for different tastes. For example, you might have a blend with Frankincense, Orange, Ylang Ylang, and Vitamin B12 for meditation. Another blend might contain Copaiba, Mandarin, Turmeric, and Vitamin B12 for healing purposes.

With most brands of portable aromatherapy devices, you will find their own proprietary blends, as well as have the option to choose your own essential oil combination.

On a side note, these diffusers do not contain nicotine. They are not an e-cigarette substitute, and are not addicting – unless you are addicted to relaxing, then that’s another issue altogether!

Portable aromatherapy devices almost always contain only essential oils, and may contain vitamins.

How do they affect you?

You are essentially breathing in essential oils just like you would be if you had put a few drops into your facial steamer. And, in this case, mist is the carrier of those oils. So the effects you feel will be the same as if you were using a facial steamer – only without the effects of warm steam all over your face.

So if putting lavender oil in your facial steamer makes you feel peaceful and calm, you should experience the same effects with a portable diffuser as well.

As mentioned, you don’t get the hot steam with a diffuser, and that may change your experience – the hot steam is definitely a big part of the relaxation you get from using a facial steamer. However, portability is the key here! You can take this with you wherever you go, or just lay in bed and enjoy.

How do you use a portable aromatherapy diffuser?

It’s actually very simple!

1.) Place it in between your lips like you would with a straw.

2.) Some brands will have a button to press, if so press it.

3.) Draw (breathe through it) with a bit of suction for a few seconds – 3-5 seconds should do.

4.) Exhale the mist.

5.) Repeat

That’s it!

One of the popular brands on the market today is a brand called Corked. I’ve been impressed with the quality of their products, and their ease of use.

The first thing you notice when you take it out of its little container is the strong aroma of whatever herbal blend that particular diffuser contains. With other brands, their flavor isn’t so pronounced, and the quality of their essential oils isn’t quite the same, and not as potent.

Once you place it in your hands, you can easily feel the quality between your fingers. They’re definitely not cheap feeling. They are sleek, and smooth, with the name of flavor etched on the side. And each of their special blends contains Vitamin B12 – a nice little bonus!

In my experience, they last anywhere between 250-300 puffs. Corked recommends “2-3 puffs per day, 3 times per day”. So if we go by those numbers, each diffuser should last roughly about a month or so.

Let’s take a look at some of the popular essential oil blends that they offer:

Name of flavor: Meditate

Ingredients: Bergamot, bitter orange, clary sage, copaiba, dill seed, eucalyptus, frankincense, hyssop, lavender, lemongrass, marjoram, orange, parsley seed, peppermint, sage, sweet marjoram, turmeric, valerian, ylang ylang, vitamin B12.

Who is it right for: If you love to meditate, if you love the mood that you get from the fusion of relaxation and essential oils – this one’s for you.

Name of flavor: Trance

Ingredients: Bergamot, bitter orange, copaiba, dill seed, hyssop, lavender, lemongrass, mandarin, peppermint, petitgrain, sweet marjoram, thyme, valerian, ylang ylang, vitamin B12.

Who is it right for: If you are the stressed busy body who just needs to calm down, try this Trance blend.

Name of flavor: Ecstacy

Ingredients: Black pepper, caraway, cinnamon leaf, copaiba, frankincense, geranium, ginger, hyssop, lemon, mandarin, orange, vanilla, vitamin B12.

Who is it right for: This is the opposite of the Trance blend. It’s for the person who needs his or her mood uplifted. I really like this blend when I’m around my favorite people!

Name of flavor: Refresh

Ingredients: Basil, caraway, cinnamon leaf, copaiba, dill seed, fennel, geranium, ginger, lemongrass, mandarin, marjoram, oregano, parsley seed, thyme, turmeric, vitamin B12.

Who is it right for: The herbs and aromatics in this blend are all noted for their healing, and immunity-boosting properties. Oregano oil is an exceptionally powerful booster. If you enjoy natural alternatives to traditional medicines and supplements, you’ll definitely like this blend.

If you like their blends, but you’re just not into a personal diffuser, they do also sell their essential oil blends.
