MYCORD Stem Cell Pool Bank -Treating Diabetes Using Stem Cells

A recent medical study conducted in Brazil was able to successfully treat Type 1 Diabetes using Stem cell transplantation therapies. The trial was also recently published in the medical journal called Frontiers in Immunology. The study involved 21 diabetics who became insulin free for more than 3 years while 1 exceptional patient became insulin free for more than 8 years.

We at Mycord want to share with our readers a few details about this miraculous breakthrough in stem cell research and medical application.

The study involved autologous hematopoietic Stem Cells, usually extracted from umbilical cord blood and tissue samples. The researches specifically targeted Type 1 diabetes because it is a fairly common auto-immune disease. This type of diabetes is easily diagnosable in the very early ages and can progress into a very ___disease.

However, not all diabetic participants had little to no effect of the stem cell treatment. This means that the research is still in its nascent stages, but going by the results, the study sure does sound promising.

Bart Roep, one of the senior researches involved in the study stated that, “We now understand stem cell transplants can succeed in treating diabetes for some.”

Dr. Roep further added that, “We discovered the immune signature predicting these outcomes—either favourable or not—which is the first step toward personalized medicine in type 1 diabetes. Understanding why it sometimes fails will allow us to design new treatment strategies for those less fortunate patients. Also, it is the first definitive proof that T1D can be cured.”

The journal highlighted that the medical study which aimed to find new avenues to cure Type 1 diabetes using properly activated stem cells. At first, the patients involved became completely insulting free for approximately 30 months. But after that, the benefits of the stem cell transplantation therapy started to reduce gradually. To mitigate this issue, T-regulatory cells (Tregs) were infused with the stem cell samples. The new stem cell sample which was infused with Tregs helped reduce insulin dependency of 6 out of 8 patients, while 2 patients become completely insulin free.

Based on the conclusion of this medical study and several others involving the clinical study of the possibilities of using stem cells to cure Type 1 diabetes. The researchers now believe that this type of diabetes is not caused by the human immune system attacking the insulin creating beta cells. It is rather caused by the dysfunctional beta cells themselves, which in turn affects the normal functioning of the human immune system.
