A recent medical study conducted at the Rutger University in New Brunswick, Canada has successfully demonstrated a new medical therapy using Stem cells to promote growth of auditory neurons. According to the senior author of the medical study, Kelvin Kwan, “It’s a cautionary tale. The experiment which involved over-expressing NEUROG1 resulted in the successful stimulation of SGNs which could lead to possible restoration of auditory functions. Kwan also stated that, “since that leads to increased cell division and NEUROG1 is used in other stem cells to make other types of neurons, scientists in other fields should be aware that when using this factor, they’ll probably also increase cell proliferation.”

In their attempts to mitigate the harmful side effects of using this type of stem cell therapy, the researches manipulated the chromatin stage of the target genes. This allowed them to substantially reduce negative stem cell growth. As stated by Kwan, “Ideally, we would change the chromatin state before we start overexpressing NEUROG1 and prevent unwanted stem cell proliferation.”
