Destination Hope COVID-19 Update May 28, 2020

We are getting closer every day to seeing the end of this pandemic, but as we move forward it’s important to be cautious and considerate of how people are feeling. Mental health has never been more important during Social Distancing, as there is an abundance of evidence that links social isolation and loneliness to a number of disorders like depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. It’s very important that we remain a pillar of hope for those struggling through this difficult time.

Now more than ever, we need to promote the plethora of ways we can still be connected. Whether it’s a phone call to a loved one, email, Zoom video calls or the various hotlines people have available in crisis, there’s no shortage of ways to keep yourself close to one another.

Another risk we face is the tension as social distancing policies relax. Many are still afraid of catching COVID-19, and as such may develop other phobias even when things return to normal, such as agoraphobia or germaphobia. Without a schedule, many people’s eating patterns may be altered or stunted, and those who don’t eat as often as they should are more susceptible to stress and anger issues that will impact their day to day lives.

It’s vital that we ensure the public that once the virus is eliminated, they don’t have to stress anymore. This may not be our job alone, but it’s one we should take seriously. We are nearing the end of this long, dark tunnel – it’s up to us to make the final push forward an easy one.

Stay Safe,

Ben Brafman
