It’s been a busy summer of sport, from Euros 2016 to the Galway Races.
However, one of the biggest events is yet to come as the 2016 Olympics kick off in Rio tonight.
Athletes from all over the world have been training for years in preparation for the competition, with 77 Irish entrants competing across 14 disciplines.
Rio is four hours ahead of Ireland so the opening ceremony will begin at midnight tonight, before the first events start on Saturday morning.
Rowing, boxing, equestrian and gymnastics are just some of the sports that will feature over the coming days, with Irish Athletes Including Nicolas Roche, gymnast Kieran Behan and boxer Stephen Donnelly among those taking part in the weekend’s events.

The stakes are high for Ireland as many athletes are in real contention for the winner’s podium, with Taylor and Conlon tipped for gold medals by Sports Illustrated recently.
The tournament will be covered extensively on RTÉ, with Daire O’Brien presenting Rio 2016: AM – an early morning catch-up on the overnight action in Rio – each day.
This will be followed by Rio 2016: Daytime at 1pm, presented by Joanne Cantwell, and this slot is expected to feature the majority of the boxing action as the likes of Katie Taylor and Micheal Conlon vie for gold in the ring.
Rio 2016: Tonight will take over from 5pm and will be led by Darragh Moloney, before Peter Collins presents live coverage of events including swimming and track on Rio 2016: Late Night from 11pm.
Derval O’Rourke, David Gillick, Michael Carruth, Kelly Harrington and Ailis McSweeney are some of the contributors that will join the panel over the coming weeks.
The competition will come to an end with a closing ceremony on Sunday August 21st.
It’s going to be a very exciting few weeks!
