1940s fabric colors and prints

In the beginning of the decade, Fabric for the clothing came in limited amounts and restrained colors. Formal and elegant clothes for women as well as men’s clothing were usually in solid colors. Shades of blue, green and red were most common 1940s fabric colors, that maintained their popularity despite changes of seasons.

Most popular 1940s fabric colors

  • Shades of green: lime green, mint green, kelly green
  • Shades of blue: navy blue, copen blue, aqua blue, turquoise
  • Shades of red and pink: sunset rose, rose wine, coral
  • Black, white and nickel gray
  • Other colors: lavender, brown, gold

1940s prints

Printed Fabrics were mostly used for day dresses. There were hundreds or even thousands of prints used during the 1940s. Probably the most notable is the polka dot pattern which was used decades before the 1940s, but is considered to be one of the classic 1940s prints. Polka dots can be small or big, but they are always perfectly even and regular in spacing. In the 1940s they were usually white on solid black, navy blue or red background or combined with floral designs.

Floral designs form the largest group of 1940s prints and patterns. They typically depicted small flowers which did not have to be very elaborated. Those could be simply shapes of flowers or leaves repeating in a pattern. Large, vivid and detailed flowers that in some fabrics do not even form a pattern came later and do not belong with the 1940s style dresses.

Likewise fashionable was the check pattern which usually contained two of the most popular 1940s fabric colors mentioned above. Often one of the colors was white, just like in another popular print – the small vertical stripes.
