What is it about the pin-‐up look that attracts you?
Amanda: The fact that it’s simultaneously bold and classic; I also love that it seems to bolster the confidence level of so many of the women who embrace it, any look that has that ability is love at first sight for me.
Katie: I love that the pin-‐up look is a combination of class, but it has a bold feminine edge. The look is so put-‐together and attention grabbing, which are two ideals that I really strive for.
Who are your biggest style icons?
Amanda: I’d say my primary style inspirations are Lucille Ball, Grace Kelly and Mary Tyler Moore. I love the ladies who will rock cigarette pants one day and a day dress the next.
Katie: As my style changes my icons seem to evolve too, but I’ve always looked to Edie Sedgwick, Audrey Hepburn and Lucille Ball as my style inspirations. I’d like to think I owe homage to all of them depending on the day.
Speaking strictly style, what is your favourite era and why?
Amanda: Absolutely the early ‘60s. You get so much of the ultra feminine looks from the ‘50s with the introduction of shorter hemlines, bolder prints and colors and, of course, BIGGER HAIR.
Katie: I think people always kinda expect me to say the 1950s, but it’s without a doubt the ‘60s. Lately, I’ve been extremely fixated with mod style, which has progressed because of my love of the 1960s. Not to mention, I just really love big bouffant hairstyles.
What advice would you give someone who is trying to achieve that classic pin-‐up look?
Amanda: Research ‘50s + ‘60s style icons and modern pinup girl and find things about the style you like, then modify it and make the look yours. Join all the fun Facebook groups out there discussion + otherwise and learn from ladies who are seasoned pros at everything from wet sets to corseting.
Katie: I would say to take inspiration from others, whether it be classic bombshells or modern day pinups. Slowly different pieces of retro + vintage clothing into your wardrobe so you can seamlessly transition into a ‘classic’ look, but also always stay true to yourself. Then I would say to stock up on good basic separates that you can mix and match and find a favorite red lipstick.
Finally, which Voodoo Vixen item are you currently lusting after?
Amanda: The Iris Cardigan in Cream would be really cute with the Penelope Skirt!
Katie: I’ve been definitely eyeing all of the houndstooth print items! Especially the Lilly Rose skirt.
