Chanel Dimensions De Chanel Mascara Review

I love a free sample and a while ago one of my friends sent my a Chanel sample via So Post and I got a mini Chanel Mademoiselle fragrance as well as a sample of the Chanel Dimensions De Chanel Mascara. This is actually the first Chanel product I think I’ve tried, the brand in my mind is the creme de la creme of high end and is one of the pricier brands out there so £25 on a mascara is a little steep for me for a product that won’t last long. Despite this line of thinking, I have always wanted to try some Chanel products so I’ve really enjoyed using this for a full week, here’s my thoughts.

I have a deluxe packaging so the packaging is different ot the full size, this cute sample it in a tube that looks like a squeezy tube but is in fact more rigid, I love the iconic monochrome theme with the packaging and it’s so easy to transport. Of course the full size is much more luxe, a weighty looking tube with drop shadows to highlight the dimensions, gold banding and a not so sweet price tag of £25.00.

So what is this mascara aiming to achieve? Boots describes the Chanel Dimensions De Chanel Mascara as the following:

A mascara that focuses on the essential. Length, curl, definition, volume and care: it provides just enough coverage to intensify the expression of the eyes and reveal their every dimension. Application is made easy with the intuitive brush and creamy texture. The longwearing formula does not run. A paraffin wax with elastic properties to lengthen lashes. Two film-forming agents that coat the lashes and define the curve that is created by the movement of the brush. A combination of four waxes with nylon microbeads to thicken lashes. A lupin extract derivative to nourish lashes. Hydrophobic agents to resist humidity, perspiration and sebum. Ophthalmologist tested. Suitable for contact lens wearers.

When I first opened this tube I noticed the typical mascara smell, this doesn’t seem to have any fragrance but it just has this universal mascara scent. I did also notice that the formula feels very dry to the point where as I was applying this it did lean towards feeling almost crumbly and it was a tad flaky. So, if you do enjoy a very wet feeling mascara then this won’t be you, with this it’s dry all the way.

I was indifferent towards this brush, I do love plastic brushes for separation and length but thick fiber brushes like this one are great for layering on coats for full voluminous lashes. I did feel like the handle was very short which led me to really sitting close to the mirror to work with this, having said that once I curled my lashes I found that this helped to hold the curl and even without curling, this mascara is great for really getting into the roots of your lashes to provide root to tip lift.

I was surprised by this, usually I find that mascaras are either length or volume but this managed to combine both, I had a lot of volume at the roots of my lashes and then that coveted flutteriness at the tips with zero clumps. I did also find that unlike a lot of wet mascaras this didn’t transfer all of my eyelid when applying like usual so great start.

(Before: Naked lashes)

(After: Wearing Chanel Dimensions De Chanel Mascara)

Whoa look at the difference! I really feel like this gives me a full lash effect, I even purposefully avoiding lining my tightline and found that the mascara made that look more defined as well, very very impressed.

Onto the downsides, of course the cost is a factor especially given that mascaras expire within 3-6 months so need to be replaced often. I also found that throughout the day this did run a little at my outer corners leaving behind some minor smudges (though not as bad as my usual smudges). Finally the formula is very dry which is fine but it can be a tad flakey and I do think that if you didn’t use this up one opened it would dry out to the point of being unusuable so it is an everyday mascara.

Aside from that, I’ll admit I’m very impressed, my top mascaras are the Benefit They’re Real and the L’oreal Telescopic and I think this is definitely up there,. In fact I used the L’oreal today and was slightly disappointed at the results after using the Chanel for a week…I’m not sure if I’d repurchase or recommend based on the cost but if you have the cash to spare it’s a decent mascara and definitely one for me for those treat yourself times!

The Chanel Dimensions De Chanel Mascara is available from Boots for £25.00.
