Over the last few years, the Diamond jewelry market has been flooded with different types of simulated diamonds. The well-known replica diamonds are Cubic Zirconia, Moissanite, Lab created diamonds, Russian Diamonds, Crystals, Diamond Nexus, and Synthetic Garnet. Technologies to produce faux diamonds have become so sophisticated, that for the diamond buyers it becomes difficult to spot the difference between real and fake diamonds. It is not possible to spot fake diamonds with the naked eye, but with some simple tests you can try to catch a fake diamond. The article here will help you to detect whether your diamond is real or just a shiny bauble.

Methods to Judge if a Diamond is real or fake

One of the easiest and most effective ways to ensure that a diamond is real is to have it appraised by a professional. Here are some other ways that will enable you to find out the difference between a fake and real diamond.
• 4c’s of Diamonds

The 4C’s of diamond grading system examines the physical features such as: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight of a diamond. This method will immediately discern poor quality imitations.
• The water Test

Take a glass of water and drop the stone in a glass. If the stone sinks in the water then it is a real one. A faux stone will never sink and float at the top of the surface. Real diamonds sink in the water due to their high density.
• Fakes Are More Heavy

A real diamond can be easily distinguished with this test. In this method, place both the diamonds on your hand and bounce them gently. The imitation diamonds will weigh approx. 55% more than real diamonds. Remember, you take both the diamonds of same shape and size.
• Transparency Method

Take a diamond and place it on its head on a piece of newspaper. If you can read the print on the newspaper, the stone can be replica. Similarly, you can try this test by placing the top of the stone on a dot drawn on a plain white paper. If the diamond throws a double refraction , the stone is not a real diamond.
• Reflection of Color
The diamonds that will have rainbow reflections are likely not genuine diamonds.
• Fakes Fog Up

This is an easy test which just needs your breathe. First of all clean the surface of the diamond properly. Now hold the diamond in front of your mouth and blow some air on it. If the diamond is real, it will not fog up. If the fog stays for 2 to 3 seconds on the diamond then it may not be a real one. According to a research, diamonds disperse heat rapidly and the fog will disappear instantaneously. If you breathe repeatedly on replicate diamonds, they will fog up more and more, while the real diamonds will be clean and clear.
• The Ultraviolet Test

The majority of real diamonds glow blue in color if put under ultraviolet light or the black color. If the diamond is not real, then it will glow other colors rather than blue or no colors at all.
So, if you are planning to buy a real diamond for yourself or your loved one, it is important that you learn the difference between real and fake diamonds. This can keep you from making a financial blunder.
