Toning Shampoo For Dark Hair

Toning shampoo for Dark Hair is something I never though existed.  Like unicorns or leprechauns or cheese that I don’t want to eat.  Little did I know that not only does toning shampoo for dark hair exist, but it’s literally just the same toning shampoo thats marketed for blondes.  Yup, you read that right, you can just buy the same ones you see for blondes and use it on your dark hair.

Why they don’t mention that you can use it on dark hair is beyond me, but my resident hair color specialist (aka Momma QuinnFace) assured me that it works and made some suggestions for maximum toneage. Here’s what I learned from her and from my experience, so if you’re like me and have dark hair that’s just being a little b*tch and looking too warm then you can tone it up a bit too.

  • FIND ONE WITH A LOT OF PIGMENT // The one I wound up buying was on amazon and it boasted “maximum level of violet dye” which is what you want if you’re looking to make an impact on dark hair.  You don’t necessarily need to use this exact one but you should research a little and maybe avoid ones that say “for platinum blonde” because those tend to be lighter.
  • LET IT SIT ON YOUR HAIR FOR AROUND 30 MINUTES // Again, since the hair is dark you want the pigments to take as strongly as possible so that it makes an impact.
  • GO SULFATE FREE // This is just a suggestion but if you are going to let the shampoo sit on your hair for a while I would try to be sure it’s sulfate free.  Sulfates are very drying so letting them sit on your hair for a while may dry you up a bit.

The difference is subtle, but I’m impressed with how much less brassy the lighter areas of my hair look after just one time using the shampoo.  I need my color done to touch up this light areas to be honest but it served as a good way to illustrate the difference the toning made so I’m glad I waited.  The light areas look almost grey, which is something I tried to achieve and failed miserably at in recent history so I’ll take it for now ?

The rest of the hair is back to looking like the cool/neutral color it is when my color is freshly done, so I would say it’s a great success. Hoorah!
