Not having black in my wardrobe, I wear a lot of Grey.  I find it to be more flattering on me because it is a lot softer and less stark than black.  However, most grey shades have a cooler base and I look better in warmer colors.  Therefore I tend to pair grey with earth tones which, in addition to being more flattering against my skin, I find to be really sophisticated.  Camel and grey?  LOVE!  Brown and grey is stunning and I love the way earthy shades look against a back drop of grey tones.  In today’s post, I am going to show you how awesome grey can look styled with earth tones and how to do it if yourself.

Don’t like grey?  Just swap it out for different neutral color

Fully realizing that grey may not be a color you prefer, I want to point out that the beauty of neutral shades is they are totally interchangeable.  In the outfits you will see below take note that you can create the same outfits using the neutral colors that you do prefer instead, like navy, black, brown, and more.  You can get the same value from this post by inserting the neutral shades you do own and like to wear.

How to Wear Grey styled with Earth Tones

Outfit #1

If you are someone who looks good in shades of brown and camel, consider adding grey to your wardrobe.  The combination is sophisticated and rich.  The brown tones warm up the grey and a beautiful balance can be created.  If grey isn’t a color that looks good near your face, try wearing the warmer shades on top.

I styled this grey Elie Tahari sheath with a camel short sleeved duster cardigan from BOSS Hugo Boss over it.  Finishing the look, I added these brown sueded water resistant boots from Calvin Klein, a cognac sueded chain bag from MICHAEL Michael Kors, stacked bracelets from Bauble Bar and semi-precious delicate earrings from Leah Alexandra that perfectly complement the colors of this outfit.

Prefer to not wear this look with grey?  Try a navy, olive or brown dress instead.  You can even wear a black dress and switch up the boots for cognac or black ones.

Outfit #2

Grey pants can be an essential in any wardrobe.  They can break you free from a black pants rut, plus, the color isn’t worn near the face which makes them universally flattering.  I styled these grey Reiss pants with an olive sweater from Theory, zippered stadium coat in a golden chartreuse, rust heeled loafers from Steve Madden, geometric scarf from Nordstrom and cognac bag from Coach.

Outfit #3

There is a whole spectrum of earth tones out there.  In addition to shades of brown, rust, olive and gold, colors like teal, warm burgundy and eggplant fall into this spectrum.  In fact, teal is considered one of the universal colors out there, meaning that it flatters all skin tones.  In the outfit above I styled this grey pencil skirt from J. Crew with a dark teal top from Lafayette 148 and accessorized the look with burgundy d’orsay pumps, a curry colored bag from Matt & Nat, printed scarf Lauren Ralph Lauren and drop earrings from Laundry by Shelli Segal.

If you have avoided wearing grey because you don’t think your coloring can handle it, remember that you can easily pair grey with your most flattering colors, including earth tones, to make it a workable color for your wardrobe.
