Neutral Color Outfit Ideas (& the best wardrobe staples)

With Neutral color wardrobe pieces, you can create dozens of outfit ideas.

Minimalist outfits are chic and sophisticated. But they can get a reputation for being boring. That CAN be true if you don’t follow a few style guidelines. Sharing how to make seamless outfits from just a few Neutral Color pieces. Similar to creating a capsule wardrobe. Let’s streamline your selections to create stunning looks!

How to Mix & Match a Neutral Color Palette

Layering Textures with a Neutral Color

Wearing neutral shades will be blah boring if you keep the pieces all the same material or all the same texture. It’s crazy how a look can transform just from mixing up the textures.

  • All the (different material) feels! Literally. Keep that idea in mind when pulling pieces for your outfit. The pieces should FEEL different as you pull them out of the closet even with the same neutral color.
  • Pair a satin top with a teddy bear sherpa coat with denim
  • Wear a faux fur vest

Switch Up the Styles

Remember the menswear trend? To refresh your memory, you might wear an oversized boyfriend blazer and balance it with a feminine dress. Let’s try the same with all of the SAME neutral shades…

  • Athletic pants with a button-down blouse
  • Printed pants paired with a sporty sweatshirt
  • Wide brim hat with a suede moto jacket
  • Cashmere duster cardigan with denim

Neutral Shade Selection

Bring on the beige, cream, and brown! But, how?

  • Closet: First things first – organize your closet by color. Easiest way to be ready to mix and match neutral color pieces because they’ll all be hanging together!
  • Accessories: Add-in accessories of the same shades to make it the exclamation point of the outfit. That’s why I chose this Gucci disco bag to compliment my look (below). I also chose this necklace that is in the same palette.
  • Shoes: Choose shoes that are the same shade, too! The boots (below) really make the outfit pop!

Start Small

Not feeling the head-to-toe neutral vibe yet?

  • Try matching ONLY your shirt/sweater to your jacket. This will create a gorgeous first-impression of the neutral outfit but won’t be overwhelming.
  • Make the majority of your look the same shade, but don’t worry if not every-single-piece is a part of that palette.
