I have seen theBalm cosmetics in one of my local Shoppers Drug Mart, but never purchased any, so I was pleased to see an Eyeshadow sample included in my July Ipsy Glam Bag. As its name suggests it is a matte eyeshadow which in my case came in the shade Matt Moskowitz which is a deep plum. Here are my thoughts.
First off, I know this is a crazy reason, but I loved the little cardboard case it came it, very cute. Also when you open it it says “you look gorgeous” - well thank you! It weighs 0.5g, so a reasonable sample size and I know that the actual eyeshadows come in much larger pans, as you would expect.
As I said this shade is called Matt Moskowitz and is a deep plum. I love purples and plums so this is a good shade for me. The actual eyeshadow feels very smooth and soft and highly pigmented - a little, will definitely go a long way. But how did it wear?
Well, I used this over Primer (Too Faced Shadow Insurance) and it went on very smoothly and blended very well with the Laura Mercier eyeshadows I used with it. There was no fallout and after 8 hours of wear, it was still looking good, even on my oily lids!
Swatch on the left with no primer, swatch on the right with Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer
When I swatched the eyeshadow for this review I did so with primer and no primer and there was a considerable difference as you can see from the photo. The colour was much deeper and as I mentioned before, no fallout with the primer, however without primer the shade was much softer and there was a tiny amount of fallout. I would definitely recommend using this with primer as I would all eyeshadows, but the difference with this one was even more noticeable than many others.
Overall I am very impressed with this eyeshadow and I am very pleased that I got to sample it. It would absolutely persuade me to buy other theBalm products on the strength of this.
