SEO Jargon Buster: Mobile Basics

Welcome once again to our Seo Jargon Buster series of blog posts, and this time we will be taking a closer look at the importance of Mobile SEO and performance.

Google has placed a stronger emphasis on mobile performance over the last few years, and websites that are not mobile-friendly are now penalised in search results.

It has never been more important to ensure that your mobile site performs as well as it can, and in this week’s blog post, we will be providing a few helpful tips to get you on your way.

Improve your mobile site’s speed

Many studies have shown that users are far more likely to leave a site that loads slowly, and this remains true for mobile users, as it is likely that they will be on the move. Website speed has had a bearing on search ranking for years, and Google continues to focus on this common issue.

The quickest way to improve your mobile website’s performance is to optimise the images by scaling them to the correct size. No one wants to load your 1920 x 1080 HD images on their mobile phone!

Improve your tap target sizes

We’ve all had the displeasure of being on a mobile site where the buttons, links and menu items are incredibly awkward to press. Mobile users can get understandably frustrated when a mobile site is hard or unnatural to navigate, and this can lead to high bounce rates, and Google takes this as a negative signal against your website.

Don’t use pop-ups

Google has now started to penalise sites that utilise large pop-ups or interstitials on their mobile pages. These type of ads are typically used to promote newsletters and sign-up forms, and they often get in the way of the content that the user is expecting to see once they land on the page.

Search engines have started to clamp down on these quite strongly, so it is recommended that you do not use them anymore.
