The OG Weekender: 10.20.17

Welcome to the weekend! In this week’s edition, we’re covering a few local Dayton events as well as the latest in marketing news. From food trucks to Facebook updates, this is the OG Weekender:

To Do in Dayton:

Catch the last Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally of the season

This Friday is the last Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally until March! In addition to some great cuisine, the rally also features live music from local bands at the Yellow Cab Tavern. If you have a craving for some of Dayton’s finest eclectic street food, don’t miss this event!

Be an archaeologist for a day at SunWatch Indian Village

Saturday is International Archaeology Day and there’s no better to way spend it than by learning about archaeology and history at Sunwatch Indian Village in Dayton. Guests attending the event will have the opportunity to visit the museum and partially reconstructed village, dig into history and have found artifacts identified by specialists, and learn about ancient sports. This free, family event is open to the public on Saturday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Experience nature at night at Aullwood Farm

GLOW: Nature at Night is a fun family-friendly event this Friday and Saturday. Experience the beauty and mystery of Aullwood Farm at twilight with wagon rides through the forest or take a hike with a naturalist led by flashlight. Local food trucks will also be onsite along with a roaring campfire. Event is free for children 2 and under.

New in marketing:

Pinterest paid search ads are now available to all brands

According to Pinterest, more than 2 billion searches occur on its website monthly. This week, Pinterest announced that brands of all sizes can now use its Ads Manager platform to reach new audiences with greater accuracy. Digital advertisers can search keywords by broad phrases or exact matches, exclude terms by negative keywords, and use Pinterest’s “Taste Graph” to automatically target users searching for keywords related to their product.

Snapchat still favorite among teens

Snapchat is still the number one social media platform among U.S. teens, despite Instagram’s attempts to copycat nearly every feature on the image/video sharing app. In a new survey, nearly 50% of U.S. teens prefer Snapchat. In 2015, Snapchat was the least preferred social network. This is good news for digital advertisers ramping up efforts to reach this demographic.

Facebook introduces self-destructing statuses

Remember the good old days, when Facebook statuses were text-only? Much like a Tweet, Facebook statuses used to be simple, short text updates, instead of the images and videos that inundate the platform today. This week, Facebook rolled out its “temporary profile status” feature, allowing users to post a status with a maximum of 101 characters and set an expiration date for the post. Users can also set whether they want the status to appear in the News Feed or just on their profile. The feature is still in testing, so you might not see it available just yet. Stay tuned to see if the new feature helps Facebook’s numbers among the younger crowd.

Have a great weekend!
