How to Backup On-premise Files into Azure

There are a number of options available to Backup on-premise files into Azure and a lot of research is also going on to improve the quality of the backup solutions. Here, we are focussing only on the on-premises backup solution.

The first step for this is to create a Recovery Services vault in Azure Backup services.

Create a recovery service vault

1. Login to Azure account and search for Backup and site recovery and click on create “resource”.

2) In the Next window, provide a name for the resource, location, resource group etc and click on create.

3) Once the resource is deployed, go to the resources and Select newly created Recovery Services vaults and click on Backup. On the newly popped window, you can see two options.

a. Where is your workload running: For this, select on-premises from the drop-down.
b. What do you want to backup: Here select “files and folders” from the options.

Once the options are selected, then click on “Prepare Infrastructure”.

4) In the next window, you will get instructions in the right pane.

Select the option: 1 which the link to download the Microsoft Azure Recovery Service (MARS) Agent for windows server. Once the agent is downloaded, click on the option no: 2 which is the link to download the vault credentials. Now, save the credentials in a safe location.

5) Install the agent when the download is completed. This is an easy click installation process and no complex steps are involved.

Once the installation is finished, you will see the below image asking to proceed with registration. Click on “proceed to registration”

6) In the next step, you will be asked to browse the vault credentials downloaded in step 4. Browse the same and proceed to next step.

7) Enter a password for the encryption and provide a location to save the same and click on finish. Ensure the password is saved in a safe location as if it is lost, the data cannot be recovered.

8) Open the Azure backup agent and click on schedule a backup. In the browse window, select the item to include in the backup.

9) In the next window, specify backup schedule and proceed to next step.

10) Here, we can choose the retention policies, which means, we can choose how long the backup should be kept in the Azure service vault. After the retention period, the backup will be automatically cleared.

11) Select the initial backup type as “Automatically over the network”. If you have large data such TB’s of data, you may select offline backup which requires another configuration.

Please refer this link to know more about the offline backup process: In https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-backup-import-export
Finish the process in the next step and backup will take place as scheduled.

12) To recover the files, open Microsoft Azure Recovery Service (MARS) Agent and click on “recover data”. And then select the server in which the backup is configured and click on next.

13)In the next step, select the recovery mode as “Individual files and folders” and click on next.

14) In the next window, select the drive and date for the backup to recover and click on “mount”.

15) Once the mounting is completed, you will see a network drive on your PC which contains the recovered files.
