PSD to HTML process will not die rather it is evolving

Since many years it has become a norm that designers create the PSD file in Adobe Photoshop and then it is sliced and converted into Html code. As growth in mobile devices is such that large percent of users who access internet actually access it on mobile devices which prompted many web development companies to create responsive websites. The website which are not responsive has not great future as they will not open well in mobile devices. Then came the conclusion that now is the time when PSD to HTML process will die as there will be no need to first  design the website using Photoshop and then convert it into HTML.

Here we are discussing about how PSD to HTML process will never die. If a person now wants a website to be developed then he prefers to first create PSD file and then convert PSD to HTML so that the site is best in quality and then coding will be done accordingly. There will always be two separate categories of software professionals namely designers and coders/programmers. Designer job is to create Photoshop design of the website which attractive look and feel and coder job is to write code for the website.

PSD to HTML evolved

People were telling about the evolution in web industry towards responsive web, better tools and frameworks and more flexible workflows but they forget to mention that PSD to HTML and Photoshop have evolved too. PSD to HTML and Photoshop are parts of web industry evolution. Converting PSD to HTML/CSS has become more easier. All browsers support HTML5/CSS3 hence there is no need to slice site designs in the old way even when you work with PSD. Now there is a plugin CSS Hat which make converting layer styles to CSS3 very easy.

Designing and Coding

If you are a designer then your expression language is visual and you give shape to thing, moving them and creating relations among them. Imagine you have to write HTML5/CSS3 code to describe visual properties of the objects which you can directly manipulate using graphical software. Then you have to check all of your changes by refreshing the browser and not immediately. This doesn’t look like an effective workflow. Hence designing by coding is not much feasible and possible to create desired look and feel.

There are some tools for opposite in which coding by designing is possible where you design in a tool similar to Photoshop and code is auto-generated.

Adobe Preparations

Adobe is aware that Photoshop is becoming less suitable for modern web development process. Therefore Adobe is actively involved in web development and has set a goal to give web designers and developers the best tools and services in the world. They have tools like Adobe Edge Reflow CC which allow to create responsive websites and can even connect to Photoshop for better responsive workflow. Adobe has also added a functionality similar to that in CSS Hat to photoshop CC. Adobe has also launched Photoshop Generator which has opened lots of possibilities for plugins authors whether it’s designing for mobiles or tool which could generate HTML5/CSS3 directly from PSD.

All of these actions of Adobe show that Adobe is trying to overcome Photoshop’s limitations for modern web design.

Hence PSD to HTML workflow is not dead and it is evolving and adapting to the designers and developers current needs and moving more towards automation.
