Web Design Trending Back Towards Minimalism With Some Exceptions

Web design trends undergo large shifts seemingly every five years or so, and this is sometimes reflected in the personal timelines of site-wide redesigns that various websites undertake to maintain the appearance of being as "relevant" as one's competitors. Early web design was originally informed by the notion that cluttered page Layouts stuffed with informative elements were about as ideal as other approaches to arranging content. As if in response to a subtly growing societal backlash against that trend, websites eventually began leaning toward minimalism in their layouts. It became important that Landing pages avoid displaying various elements that could distract from what might otherwise be a strong first impression. The success that Google has enjoyed as a search engine over competitors like Yahoo is partially owed to the minimalist design of its landing page, for example.

This does not mean, of course, that websites aiming for the comparative "cleanliness" offered by simple page layouts should cut out important features and pieces of information that are best placed on the landing page to begin with. If a site's landing page consists of the author or business' name in large and bold typeface, a brief blurb identifying itself in the most basic terms, and contact information, then it can rightly be criticized for failing to draw in the user with a descriptive call to action. Such a landing page would also draw criticism if one or more of its sole lines of "side-content" is a pale gray contrasting against a white Background, which would make it hard for different kinds of users to even see the important text.

At any rate, the most recent trends in engagement-focused web design seem to be veering back from minimalist extremes and are more willing to have landing pages overlay their otherwise simplistic content atop detailed backgrounds. It is common for this background to be a high-definition photograph that shows the business or designer's workplace. However, great care and some artistic sense may be needed to make sure that the contents of the background do not incidentally make the floating text hard to make out.
