Color, White Space, Typography, and Layouts: Basic Website Design Elements

Creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing website is challenging, but good web designers do it every day. The key to creating a stunning website is knowing the target audience. It has to look appealing to them, not you as the Designer. To stand out, the site also has to look modern, fresh and clean.

White Space

Having enough white space is essential. Cluttered sites annoy Visitors. Too many ads are distracting, too. White space helps visitors navigate and helps them find important elements that you want to highlight.

Consistency

Consistency is key to providing a positive experience for visitors. They like things that make using a site more efficient and eliminates pain points. A common page layout makes it easy for visitors to find a search box or other element, no matter what page they are on.

Consistency also applies to fonts and icons. Have a standard Font and only vary it for the logo or tagline. If you use rounded rectangular buttons, use them throughout the site.

Colors

Choosing colors for a website can be overwhelming. Skilled web designers consider the meaning of colors, the brand's identity and current trends when selecting a color palate. Consumers expect certain industries to use specific colors; a pink and purple bank website wouldn't inspire trust. Giving people what they expect and are familiar with is always a good idea.

Typography

Typography should match the brand's voice. It communicates more than most people think; from professionalism to warmth. Avoid comic sans at all costs. No professional website designer uses this font. Pick a primary font that is effortlessly readable, like a sans serif font.

If you’re a professional web designer, and not just creating your own site, your client will have definite opinions on that they consider an excellent design. Educate them about design best practices, but if they still insist on their natural cleaning products website being silver and orange with four different fonts, decide whether you will do it, knowing it will fail and possibly earn you a very negative review.
