Tips To Reduce RAM Demand

Many users of personal computers are aware that their system will eventually slow down if they are running multiple apps with elaborate graphical elements. If someone has both a video game running in the foreground and Web Browsers open in the background, whether the system slows down as a result is determined by how much RAM the computer has access to. Even if the programs themselves do not necessarily slow down, the strain on the computer's memory may result in its cooling systems making a lot more noise on account of the motherboard emanating extra heat.

PC users may be surprised to learn, however, that mainstream web browsers like Firefox and Chrome occupy significant swaths of memory just by remaining open, even in cases where one such browser is only displaying one window tab with content bereft of graphically intensive elements. Looking at the Task Manager's reports on ongoing processes, a mainstream browser can easily occupy half a gigabyte of memory by itself. Multiple Tabs being open within one Firefox or Chrome process does not necessarily increase the RAM usage by significantly large strides beyond this. However, this is decidedly not the case if each tab is currently displaying a CPU-intensive website like a video-streaming service.

PC users can easily alleviate the strain on their machines' RAM by minimizing the number of concurrent tabs that are open, but this is not a reasonable recourse for users who need to have many tabs for many specific websites accessible at once. Web extensions such as OneTab for Chrome are popular for allowing the user to close out open tabs without forcing the user to go out of their way to return to the original URLs in order to open them back up as needed. OneTab does this by saving the URL of any closed tab to a list so that the user can easily click on the link some time afterward. A more recent take on this concept named TabMerger aims to offer additional UI customization options and organizational features such as the ability to include stored tabs within custom-named categories.
