Domain Owners vs Web Hosts: Who Really Controls Your Site?

It can be easy to buy a domain and think that you own it outright, but the fact of the matter is that when you use a web hosting company, you have to pay close attention to the fine print. One of the most relevant cases in point is the sneaky inclusion of Javascript that GoDaddy hides in their site. It's tucked away in service agreements, so you may not notice it unless you're looking closely, but this Script could raise some worrying red flags for those looking to protect their privacy, and it could even cause slowdown for your visitors. GoDaddy ostensibly claims that this script - which is buried as JavaScript before your HTML tags - is designed to monitor performance, but some GoDaddy users have concerns that the registrar company could be selling the information gathered to third party services. Such claims are unsubstantiated. Regardless of GoDaddy's intentions with this insertion of JavaScript, it's been known to cause trouble for some users. First introduced in 2017, this script is known to sometimes cause error messages in the DOM and cause WordPress sites to crash. It's an obvious problem, but it fortunately has a solution. If you're experiencing error messages related to broken JavaScript or you're worried about what your provider will do with the information, you do have the opportunity to opt out at any time. Start by logging in to your GoDaddy account, then navigate to the My Products section. From there, you'll need to navigate to the Web Hosting section and click the button labeled Manage All. This will bring you to the new cPanel. If you click on the hamburger menu on the upper right hand corner, you'll see a Help Us option. Here's where you can toggle off the monitoring scripts by clicking on the Opt Out button. These monitoring scripts are a fairly new feature, and there's a decent likelihood that they're intended solely for site maintenance. But the lack of transparency on GoDaddy's part is a worrying sign, and users should choose to opt out if they have any related problems with their site.
