3 Portfolio Tips to Show Off Your Web and Graphic Design Work

Having an online portfolio is becoming more and more of a necessity in today’s world, especially if you work in the field of digital media. One of the first things an employer will look for is a digital Portfolio that features your past work.

It’s important to learn how to integrate your ability as a Graphic designer into your portfolio. Here are three tips on how to best present your digital portfolio.

  1. Go The Extra Mile

After working hard on a design project you might think that it’s best to let the work stand for itself.

Don’t fall into this trap.

You need to entice people to click on it. Make sure it is a portfolio that tries to do something different. A good way to accomplish this would be to reflect the design theme of the project in your portfolio.

If the project you want to highlight involves a lot of hand-drawn illustrations, feature those illustrations on the graphic that links to your project.

It’s important that you’re able to give the viewer a sense of what they’re getting into before they have even clicked on it.

  1. Don’t Forget Web and Graphic Design Flow

A lot of times, web and graphic design artists will suddenly abandon all the principles of good design when putting together their portfolio.

Make sure to feature your best work, but also make sure that it all works well together on the page.

The thumbnails or previews to the projects should be balanced. Avoid colors that clash. Keep your images consistent.

Think of it like your Instagram account. Each photo you post will be something different but when you zoom out, you want each of them to contribute to the vibe of your page and your account as a whole.

Your best projects won’t always flow together naturally. You’ll need to get creative in the ways you design the graphics that preview your work.

Emphasize smaller aspects of the projects if they work better at maintaining the overall theme of your portfolio.

  1. Invest In Yourself

Not every project you feature needs to be something you got paid for. A lot of times you are limited by the constraints your client has put on the project they’re paying you for.

If you really want to flex your stuff, make something yourself. This is a perfect way to show off how creative you can be when someone takes the reigns off of you.

Make sure you save them to somewhere accessible, like a storage gateway target, so you won’t lose any of your hard work.

And don’t forget to keep your eye on what other designers are doing, you never know where you’ll find inspiration for your next creative project

With these tips, you should be well on your way to a perfect portfolio sure to land you the web and graphic design job of your dreams.
