The Venice Glass Week - #TheHeartOfGlass
The Venice Glass Week is the international festival which celebrates, support and promotes the art of glassmaking: the artistic and economic activity for which the Lagoon City of Venice has been renowned around the world for over 1,000 years. The fourth edition, #TheHeartOfGlass, took place in early September. This year, thespecial focus was on the production of glass, with the aim of helping to relaunch and revitalize the glass sector – primarily that of Murano – after months of closure caused by Covid-19. The art and craft of “making” glass is deeply embedded in Venice’s DNA, and thanks to the knowledge and skills that have been handed down and evolved over the centuries, Murano glass continues to be one of Italy’s most famous exports, admired and celebrated around the world.

The Floating Furnace
In 1574, when King Henry III of France visited Venice, a series of glassmaking demonstrations was organised on a floating barge located in front of Ca’ Foscari on the Grand Canal, where the King was staying. Inspired by this historical precedent, one of the highlights of the festival was The Floating Furnace: a programme of demonstrations, using a boat and a mobile furnace supplied by Consorzio Promovetro Murano, in collaboration with a number of Murano glass masters.
