Overwatch is yet another successful release from Blizzard. Overwatch was released on May 24, 2016 and in the few months since has built an incredible following. The game reached 10 million active players in less than a month. It almost seems as if Blizzard doesn’t put a foot wrong these days.
Why am I calling Overwatch the best FPS? There are couple of things to consider here – the look of the game, the fun factor, the Community, and finally Blizzard. Yes, I said Blizzard!
Blizzard is able to produce games which are accessible to both casual and hardcore gamers. Overwatch is no exception, it’s a game enjoyed by the casual gaming community, yet it is balanced enough to develop a competitive eSports scene.
Also, Blizzard is one of the few game publishers that invests in building a story around each of it’s characters. These are stories players are find interesting and are able to relate to.
One manner in which Overwatch differentiates itself from other shooters is by supporting a unique art style which is reminiscent of Blizzard games. Bright colorful characters with beautifully crafter armor and shiny weapons.
That alone is not enough however, a game has to be fun for players to loose countless hours in. Though Overwatch currently only has a few game modes, such as Control, Escort etc. Overwatch achieves the fun factor by providing unique Heroes to choose from. In the FPS world, most games provide variety by offering a different set of guns, whereas Overwatch takes variety to a whole new level. Overwatch is almost like playing a MOBA game in FPS mode.
This provides uniqueness which isn’t available in other titles in the same genre. Imagine being able to take a cyborg ninja who uses only a sword to battle other Heroes in an FPS game? Imagine playing as an archer who fires a dragon from his bow? Imagine being the Tank or Healer for your team even though you are playing a competitive shooter?
As I mentioned at the start of this article, Overwatch already has a great community behind it. Over 10 million players are enjoying this great game right now and from personal experience, I can only assume that this number will grow even higher. Blizzard does an excellent job of listening to it’s players and updating the game to constantly improve the players’ experience. This is evidence from recent patches where Blizzard nerfed or boosted a Hero’s stats due to feedback from the community.
If you haven’t already tried out this gem, or are sitting on the fence, I suggest that you give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
