The Trip to Spain (2017) is the latest feature film in ‘The Trip’ series which stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon and was directed by Michael Winterbottom. The Trip to Spain was made by the same trio who also made The Trip TV series (18 episodes) and The Trip to Italy (2014) film and features the same type of content where Steve and Rob play exaggerated versions of themselves traveling the countryside, eating local delicacies and trying to outdo each other with famous celebrity impressions.
The Trip to Spain features polished camera work that shows off the landscape and vistas of Spain and the duo make sure to visit local attractions and sit and eat right in the center of the dining experience. The movie feels like a crossover between the show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and Curb Your Enthusiasm with a more British flavor. I wasn’t quite sure how much of the show was scripted or improvised but some of the smirks and laughs done by Steve and Rob felt earnest.
The Trip to Spain Blu-ray DVD Review Final Thoughts:
We usually take a crack at reviewing the special features or bonus content on the Blu-ray and DVD releases but unfortunately, this release comes with zero extras outside of the trailer for the film. The cover artwork and inside sleeve photograph is put together nicely and if you are a fan of this series then you’ll most likely want to add this disc to your collection. The Trip to Spain was not ‘The Funniest Film of 2017’ as the box quote would suggest but it does have a casual charm to it for someone not looking for much in the way of story and more interested in a slice of traveling and best friend banter.
