Hyper Light Drifter Review

Hyper Light Drifter Review

Hyper Light Drifter was featured as Josh’s Steam pick of the week. It looked like something that I would be into so I figured I’d give it a shot. After my time with this game, I am left with incredibly mixed feelings. On one hand Hyper Light Drifter is a work of art. The pixelated graphics and wonderful sound track work together to form a beautiful experience. But on the other hand, this game is so mind-numbingly difficult, that some players may find themselves cursing and thrashing about in a hate filled rage. Ok maybe not that intense, but it can be quite frustrating. What does this mean for the overall rating for the game? Find out in my Hyper Light Drifter Review!

As I outline in this review, the game has a lot going well for it, but the one major feature holding it back. Not all is lost though, in my opinion Hyper Light Drifter can still be the awesome game that it deserves to be. All that would be needed is a couple small changes.

Definitely the first alteration would be the addition of different difficulty levels. There is a wide range of players out there with a wide range of skills, and for a game to be truly successful, it needs to resonate with gamers of all skill levels. Perhaps a simple easy, hard, insane breakdown would give casual players a way to enjoy the game at their own pace, and players looking to be challenged the appropriate level of difficulty. What this could further do is lend itself to multiple playthroughs. If a player beats the game on easy or hard, they may be incentivized to try the next difficulty up.

The other change I would make to the game is to include a setting where there is an alternate way for players to heal themselves. The health packs offer a great source for mid battle health regeneration, but when you’re stuck at one health and need a boost it sucks to have to use one of these packs. Maybe a slow health regen when out of combat to allow players to at least restore their health to five bars before they enter these difficult battles. This change wouldn’t change the difficulty of the fights, it would just allow players to enter fights at least somewhat prepared every time.

Overall I was impressed with Hyper Light Drifter, and my final verdict would have been around an 8 had the difficulty not been such a large issue for me. I understand that there will be players who find this game amazing and without any problems. Perhaps I put too much stock into the overabundant challenge to this game, but the truth is that great games allow players of all skill levels to enjoy them, not just the skilled players. Hopefully the developers of Hyper Light Drifter will hear this critique and will be able to change the game for the better.
