Lost Ark Review

Not quite Diablo, not quite an MMO.  Personally I think it is a good blend of the two genres.  Combat is definitely like Diablo, and the class I picked, gunslinger, never gets old because of the large skill pool.  Probably only of the biggest in the game, but once you get an handle on how to play it feels great.

However, I do think that due to the nature of the game some people will be turned off as outside of dungeons, specific quests, rare mobs, and world bosses there really isn't a point in fighting mobs in the over-world unless they are in the way of harvesting crafting resources because the XP and rewards they drop are very low.  Levelling is almost certainly centered more around completing the adventure book and quests.  The Main Quest is pretty interesting and has a lot of large scale moments that are definitely inspired by some of my favourite fantasy settings.

Speaking of the Main quest, the game does a good job of slowly introducing you to the game's many mechanics.  Giving you time to get familiar with one before introducing another.  Keeping in mind that this game has been around in Korea for a number of years with several updates the scale of this game is insane and more ambitious than several other MMOs that I've played.  Want to have a home you can customize?  Its in there.  Want to sail around the world to new locations?  You got it.  I'm not done the main quest yet and if they introduce another well thought out and done mechanic I'll be blown away.

So far the community has been pretty decent on the server I'm on.  Your mileage may very, and this game is definitely best played with friends.  Although some people, even in early access, seemed to want to skip over every cut scene possible, most were cool with letting you watch the story unfold.  Its a good thing skipping a scene requires everyone in the party to hit the skip button.

While the graphics aren't anything to write home about they are fairly decent at the very high setting which most newer gaming computers should be able to handle.  However, the game is prone to hog CPU and RAM while running so if you are planning on streaming you might need to either turn settings down or make sure you are well above the recommended system requirements.  Also myself and several people have noticed that it is best to check task manager after closing the game as even though the game has closed its process doesn't always properly quit.  Hopefully they will fix these performance issues in future patches.

I bought a bronze founders pack to play this early, but I don't think a pack is necessary to enjoy this game.  It stands true to the F2P model and is actually F2P.  I'd encourage any of my friends who enjoy Diablo or MMOs to try out this game.  After all what do you have to loose, but time?

I'll see you in Arkesia!
