In the past few weeks, we've been hearing some rumors suggesting that Microsoft is gearing up to launch a Chromebook killer this month. And apparently, those rumors were true. Today, at Microsoft's education-focused event in New York, this company finally introduced a new Surface laptop. And yes, it's aimed at no other than Chromebooks.
However, unlike other Chromebooks that mostly are affordable to buy, this Microsoft' new Surface laptop, on the other hand, will be one hell of a pricy high-end laptop. The price starts at $999 with specs like Intel Core i5, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD on board.
It will also be the world's first laptop to ship with Windows 10 S out of the box - which is the new Cloud-based operating system deployed in education market.
The good news, if this Surface laptop is too expensive for you, don't you worry my friend. According to Microsoft, there will be many hardware partners from Fujitsu, HP, Acer, Samsung, ASUS and Toshiba that will also make Windows 10 S laptops with the price starting at $189.
Actually, in the same day today, Acer and HP took the chance of this event to introduce their new affordable Windows 10 S laptops that both will cost only $299.99.
What's s great about Microsoft Surface Laptop?
So what's so special about this new Surface laptop? What makes this Windows 10 S computing device deserve a really expensive $999.99 price tag?
Well, if we're looking at this laptop in the entire aspect, then it's very obvious that Surface laptop has all what it takes to be a high-end laptop.
First of all, this Microsoft's Surface laptop is actually using the traditional clamshell design used mostly on regular laptops today.
So it's totally different than Surface Book or Surface Pro laptop - NO kickstand on the back, NO detachable display whatsoever and it also cannot be rotated 360 degrees just like other counterparts such as HP Spectra x360, etc.
So it's a pure normal laptop.
But what makes it really special is that, Surface laptop comes with premium aluminum finish all over the place. And it's also thinner, lighter and 50% much faster than even Apple's Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, as claimed by Microsoft.
Microsoft Surface laptop features a 13.5-inch display sporting the 1080p resolution. But we believe this is only the base model, which means you can bump up its screen resolution with higher price tag.
The coolest thing is, just like most of new-gen laptops today, this Surface laptop also comes with a touchscreen display. And it also works with Surface Pen, Surface Dial and more.
It's running on Microsoft's new cloud-based OS called Windows 10 S, which is aimed at education market for students and teachers. It's the simplified version of Windows regular 10 Pro OS, which only means it will be more efficient with power consumption.
It's also more secure than the regular version and users are only allowed to install apps from official Windows store. So apps from 3rd party websites are not welcome here. But according to Microsoft, users can install 3rd party apps outside Windows Store, but they will be required to upgrade the software from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro.
In terms of specs, this new Surface laptop packs a lot of punch for a thin laptop. It's got an Intel Core i5 processor, 4gigs of RAM and 128GB of SSD. But this is only the base mode, which is the cheapest variant of all.
So if you want to get the one with Intel Core i7 processor, sharper display, bigger RAM and so on, of course the price will dig deeper in your pocket.
Another cool thing about this Surface laptop is, its keyboard uses fabric materials, just like the one used on Surface Pro 4's Limited-edition keyboard.
According to theVerge, the keyboard feels pretty good, the buttons are responsive and it doesn't feel like the Chiclet-style keyboard found on the regular 12-inch Macbook.
Microsoft claims that this Surface laptop is capable to deliver a 14 and a half hour of battery life to users, which is awesome because you can totally use it all day without needing to recharge it during the day.
Ports and Speakers
There are some regular ports equipped on this machine, from regular USB ports, mini display port. Unfortunately, there is NO USB Type-C port on this laptop, which is a bummer given that most of today's new-gen laptops already come with this port.
There are also integrated speakers on Surface laptop. Interestingly, Microsoft decides to place speakers underneath the laptop, which is on the back of keyboard. So there are no speaker grills whatsoever on the inside of the laptop.
According to theVerge, this Surface laptop feels great in the hands. In fact, it's the kind of feel that has been dreamed to happen to Surface laptops in general. But it finally happens right now on this new Surface laptop.
When will it come out?
Microsoft Surface Laptop will be available soon on June 15. As mentioned above, the price starts at $999.99 for the base model with Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD. So you can expect the price to go up for the one with beefier specs.
This laptop will be available in wide range of colors, from Cobalt, Platinum, Blue, Burgundy and Graphite Gold. So if you're interested of getting this laptop, expect it to hit the shelves this month. But the most importantly, make sure first that you have $999.999 in your pocket.
