Josh "Eqo" Corona made a gesture in allusion to Asian features
A few weeks ago we informed you of the suspension of Felix Lengyel, player of the Overwatch League, for his offensive comments and the sanction against 3 more players for the same reason. Unfortunately, the professional league has been involved in the controversy, again, for a matter related to the conduct of one of its professionals.
The professional player of the Philadelphia Fusion team of the Overwatch League, Josh "Eqo" Corona, has generated controversy after making a broadcast in which he made a gesture considered offensive to the people of Korea. Corona, one of the leading players in the league, pretended to have slanted eyes while communicating with a user, after a sterile debate in which, jokingly, the professional claimed to be originally from South Korea. The transmission was made on Twitch and had nothing to do with the Overwatch League, however, those who saw the gesture did not take long to make the action public and there the controversy was generated.
Criticism for the action of Josh Corona came to the official Twitter account of Tucker Roberts, president of Philadelphia Fusion, who regretted what happened and reported that they are contemplating the penalty for the player. So far there has been no official pronouncement by the organizers of the Overwatch League.
For his part, Josh Corona offered an apology through the same social network and said that his intention was not to offend anyone because he loves the Koreans and ensures that he has always been responsible for making a compliment.I'm really sorry for the way @eqo behaved. We are working on a punishment now.— Tucker (@BLT) April 2, 2018
In this way, Josh Corona joins the list of professional players who have recently been involved in controversy and criticism for making the same type of gesture alluding to Asian features, as happened with the Houston Astros player of the MLB, Yuli Gurriel, and with the Colombian soccer player, Edwin Cardona. At the time I wasn’t aware that this might offend anyone if u watch my stream you will probably know that I love koreans and all I do is compliment them all the time ... this gesture was never with the intention to mock someone 1/2— Eqo (@eqo) April 1, 2018
