The Reverence Hotel – Review

Another week, another review. As I said, I’m currently eating my way round Melbourne so they’ll be plenty more of where this came from.

This time is The Reverence Hotel in Footscray, a little pub that is super-casual but does great food. You pay at the bar too, so there’s no issue of trying to call over the server when you want another drink or it’s time for the bill, which personally I really like because there’s no annoying waiting about, and you can take as long or as little as you want. Also if you’re into music, they have regular gigs which is another reason to head down and eat some great vegan food.

I’d heard good things about The Reverence Hotel for vegans, so it’s been on my list for a while of places to go. I’m a big fan of mock-meat. I feel like I shouldn’t be, because it’s essentially processed food and I like to eat healthy when I can, but as I eat mostly plant-based during the week, I like to be able to pig out and have something different on the weekend.

The menu was full of my favourite foods, and in terms of what they offered it was very similar to The Cornish Arms, so it was difficult to choose. Luckily Sam was in the same predicament, so we decided to get two different things and share. Sam wanted to try the meat lovers pizza; spicy sausage, bacon, and Chicken, drizzled with Jack Daniels BBQ sauce. All vegan of course. I wanted to go for the chicken burger, which was breaded chicken, crushed corn chips, guacamole, bacon, spicy relish, chipotle lime aioli, tomatoes, onions and pickled cactus. We also decided to get a side of popcorn chicken, because it’s all about that mock meat!

Lets start with the pizza. I’ll admit, it does not look all that appetising in these photos. I tried, but taking a photo of something like that is really difficult to make look attractive. It tasted delicious though, and we loved all the different types of vegan mock meats.

Next up was the burger. Again, really delicious and the chips were amazing. The chicken was very realistic (but not to the point where it’s unsettling) and really succulent, with the various toppings suiting the burger perfectly.

Finally, the popcorn chicken. This was by far my favourite. The texture was super realistic and it was really delicious. In fact, if you’ve ever tried the Lord of the Fries nuggets, they were very similar to them.

Of course, never ones to miss up on an opportunity of a dessert, we decided to share chocolate nachos. These were amazing. Chocolate nachos with chocolate sauce, nuts and ice cream. SO GOOD! It was a big portion though, so it was definitely worth sharing.

If you’re a big lover of mock meats, I’d definitely recommend putting The Reverence Hotel on your list of delicious vegan places to eat in Melbourne.
