Synchronicity is a 2015 American Science Fiction film directed by Jakob Gentry and starring A.J. Bowen, Brianne Davis and Michael Ironside. When physicist Jim Beale invents a machine that can fold space-time, a rare Dahlia appears from the future. He must now find the flower’s identical match in the present to prove his machine works. Jim soon discovers that the Dahlia lies in the hands of a mysterious girl, who seduces him into revealing his secrets. Convinced that he’s fallen prey to a femme fatale trying to steal his invention, Jim travels back in time to stop her betrayal before it happens. But once in the past, Jim uncovers a surprising truth about the machine, the girl, and his own reality. The score is composed by Ben Lovett.

Ooh, a time traveling tale! I love those and this promises good things, and I hope it delivers. The musical is described as classic synth so that’s already a winner in my book. The score opens with ‘Project Log’ a gorgeous space-y synth symphony hits me. Now this is it, this is the sound I had hoped to find, but never quite believed it. It’s a mix of Vangelis, Jarre and 80s. As far as I’m concerned I am already stuck in space and time listening to this gorgeous music. ‘KMC014’ is even better reminding a bit of classic Vangelis before they went all mainstream. This is the kind of music that require really good audio equipment, really really good. The clarity and detail you can get out of the, must get out of this, is astounding.

I’ve missed this sound and I know see that the PR blurb about 70s/80s Vangelis inspired synth isn’t far off the mark (which PR blurbs sometimes tends to be). ‘Variables’ reminded me a bit of Terminator, the way the synth horn is used and sounds, but of course this is more dreamy, more ethereal experience overall. This is without a doubt my first true love of 2016, a score that takes me back and on a journey through space and time. They don’t make scores like this anymore, seriously. But to me (and many others), this never went out of style, and I don’t think it ever will. In fact, it wouldn’t be a crazy thought to think that this might come back in style because I can’t think of many types of music that feels more science fiction than this. It’s retro science fiction and thus simply awesome. The one thing though where this music would have really excelled is lengthy suites. Sadly the longest cue is just over 4 minutes. I would love to hear it all in gapless form, just a journey in itself. I love this score and I hope you will too.
