Akon Loves His Chick....All of Them.

The Miss Info Report
Different strokes for different folks, right?

Today my homegirl and co-worker, Hot 97 host Angie Martinez spoke to Akon about relationships. Akon, who recently released a single with Eminem, explained that as an African (Ak' is from a very prominent music family in Senegal) he believes in polygamy.

His father had four wives, all of whom he considers "Mom". It also turns out that Akon has taken up a Senegalese lifestyle here, because after a little hesitation, the singer-producer admitted that he has his own multi-monogamous household going down in the ATL!

VH1 is socially-irresponsible to put this on, not because of Akon, but the idea of polygamy in America on YOUTH is going to have serious ramifications. Someone needs to tell VH1 that there is something called AIDS. Can they even imagine Black youth going around with 3 or 4 girlfriends. This is sending the signal to YOUTH that it is somehow OK to live this way, couple it with problems that exist in our culture today and you have a toxic soup.

With outright garbage like this our struggle is put back several hundred years now. Instead of showing LOVE between TWO PEOPLE, they're showing YOUTH that it's somehow OK to love several Women at a time. AIDS is very real y'all. With VH1 presenting this type of stuff, they may as well start injecting kids with hyperdermic needles. We don't need a conspiracy theory when it is RIGHT IN OUR FACE. A shame on American society that television shows are now PROMOTING AIDS INFECTIONS AMONG BLACK PEOPLE.

  • Ginny:

Hello, all, antoher issue for me is that he's equating "having multiple girlfriends" with the practice of polygamy, and it's not even the same thing. Yes, you are dealing with multiple women, but with "girlfriends" generally, you don't have any financial obligations to them, whereas with "wives", you're obligated to provide for them. Also, in the Miss Info report, Akon says thta he can "have as many wives as he can afford". I don't know what kind of Islam he learned and here he learned it, but the limit is four, says very clearly in the Qur'an that it is four. So I'd sure like to know who told him it could be "as many as he could afford", but maybe he forgot his Islam along the way, God alone knows best.

Another issue that's bothering me is on Wikipedia there's a huge discussion going on as to what Akon's "real" name is. On the Akon article, there's this long name, and there are Wolof speakers who are arguing that some of that name can't be his "real" name, becuase some of the "name", means "I wanna f*ck you", in Wolof, and they were pretty adamant that no way would his parents give him that name. But you also have others saying, "no, he's said in interviews that this is his real name". Now, assuming that it is not, and it's the "nasty expression" that some claim that it is, why on earth would he come over here and tell people that it is his real name, knowing full well that we'd never know the difference? Pretty deceptive to me! And I'm not exactly sure whether they guy has multiple wives, girlfriends, concubines, mistresses, or what have you, and we can't say that the whole show wasn't entirely scripted, as he mentioned that him and Angie Martinez tried to think of things to ge tthe covnersation going. So the whole thing was meant to be controversial. So first he's got wifey(s), now the latest is that he doesn't, and he's according to some, going around telling people that part of his name is a derogatory Wolof expression. I know Wolof speakers and I'm ashamed to even ask them if the expression "damala bouga time", means what some say it means, because they may be too embarrassed to answer me. And also, not all Afircans, or Muslims for that matter practice polygamy, not sure why he even said that. So he's generalizing Africans, Muslims, etc., and I don't like generalizations. It's all starting to seem like a publicity stunt, and just something to stir up gossip, and I can only imagine the trouble it coudl be causing him and his family. But anyway, anything to sell those records I guess. Subhanallah, not much more I could really say on this I guess.

Greetings all, as a Muslim, and a woman, too, I don't disagree with polygamy, in and of itself, and I don't disagree with Akon's decision (or not, depending on how you're reading his comments), however, here is what I have a problem with. How can you talk about polygamy being "your religion and culture", and talk about Islam, etc., yet your music or at least some of it, doesn't even reflect Muslim values? I mean, try playing "Smack Dat" or "I wanna F*ck You", after Jumua on Friday, and see what the imam says? It's like he wants to be all "muslim" and "Senegalese", when it suits him, but is it "Senealese culture" to talk about "smackin' dat", and calling women hoes, etc.? And sayin, "I wanna fuck you?" Oh come on now. He just wants to have his cake and eat it too and use it as an excuse. I know of so many Muslim men who do this! alk about "being a Msulim" when they want their four wives, yet forget all about Islam, when it comes to prayer, fasting, and general good character! Foul language, and talking about watching women gridning on those poles is not "Islamic". You ain't even supposed to be looking at women you ain't married to anyway! Youssou Ndour got more than one wife, but he ain't singing about "f*ckin" anyone or "you grinding on that pole", etc., as far as I know. So what's up with that? Perhaps Akon just said what he said to stir people up, but a lot of stuff has hit the an over it, and as a Muslim woman, who's heard his latest album, I'm appalled! It's one thing to sing the kind of stuff he does, but then to talk about "Islam" when he wants all of wome and use Islam to jsutify it? Oh whatever! As far as him "upholding the Ummah", eyah right! Whoever said that didn't listen to some of those songs on his CD. But anyway. The phrases, in I can't remember if it's the Qur'an or the hadith, which says that when news comes to you of an affair, one should investigat it, to dicover the veracity of what you're hearing, before you go spreading it around, so I hesitated on commenting, however when it's the very person starting the "rumor" that the "nes" is about, well, what do you do? Guess I'll stop for now.

    check Akon's interview:

Now it's time to clear up something. Did your father have more than one wife?

No. Let me explain it. This is the problem with Black America, they take something and remix it. This is my personal experiences. They're going around saying Africans [have more than one wife based off of] something I said [on a radio show]. All Africans don't do it. A lot of times, it's a religious belief. I can literally say a lot of guys do it without getting married. [I said what I said to have an] open discussion. It just went to a whole other level, and then it started affecting other people's lives. Honestly, I didn't mean for it to blow like it blew. But I should have known better.

    We're talking about polygamy, right?

We're just talking about guys with more than one woman, in general. In actuality, I'm not speaking on behalf of all Africans, and I'm not speaking on behalf of all men. I feel like this, whenever [you bring that topic up], you open up the conversation for us to [have] that discussion, period. 'Cause that's pretty much the biggest problem [men and women] have, ain't it? I'm in a position where I was dating more than one woman, but I was honest about it. And I would tell her, 'Look, this is my situation. This is what I got at home. This is what I got on the side. And give her the respect and opportunity to be able to choose, 'Okay, this is the package that comes with him if I decide to deal with him.' Now, she can choose to do it or say, 'You know what, I'm glad he gave me the decision, I think I'll do without.'

How many women do you have?

That's too personal. I don't want to take it to a point where it's too far out there so if I was to go and constantly promote that, what does that do? If I was to go and promote this on every radio station, then it's gonna look like I'm out there promoting polygamy, when that's not the case. I'm just being real. I'm being honest as possible. I've always been that kind of person. But when I get to a point where I feel like it's destroying other people's lives, then it's a responsibility I got to contain. I have other friends that do believe in that, and it's affecting their families now. I don't want it to be, like, where Africans are even looking at me in a different way. 'Cause if I'm speaking on behalf of them, and I'm misrepresenting them, and they're my biggest supporters, the last thing I want to do is lose the respect of Africans. So I must apologize for speaking on behalf of certain situations where it might have come out wrong. But you know that's a part of the media. It happens. At the end of the day, I would like to clear up a situation. I should have never brought that out in the public, because it ended up being a big big issue.

So why did you bring it up?

It felt good at the moment. It was like, you know, I was gonna give them something to talk about. It opened up the discussion. It opened up a door that normally wouldn't have been open for people just to communicate. So that was the main purpose.
Everybody is doing it. You know how many dudes got mad women? Honestly, as men sometimes, we can be selfish.

So now, what if a woman said something like that, if that was her position?

You can't control that. Who are you to say that 'I can do it, but you can't.'

What if she's doing a different guy every night of the week, and you're Thursdays?

I don't judge her based on that. It's her life. But if I'm involved, I'm gon' take all week. I'm gonna represent. I'm gonna do what I do.

    Are you married?

I'm not about to get into my personal life. I made that mistake once. You gotta do your research. When I go to accept that Grammy, I'll have my family, my real family, with me. It may be what I said, it may not be. But the reality show is comin' soon so lookout for it!

Do you want to give a special shout out to your boo, or one of your boos?
(Laughs). I would never put nobody in the line of fire.

Do you have your eyes any females out there? Maybe celebrities in the game?

Well, my eyes are always out. You're gonna get me in trouble.

What do you think about Akon's perspective on relationships? Is it okay to date more than one woman as long as he's honest about it? Click DISCUSS NOW and talk about it!

i am an african , born and bred and still living in africa. Our forethers practiced polygamy , thats a fact but many africans now hate it coz the women and children suffer while the men fulfil their selfish ego desires. God never designed polygamy, it was people. He created Adam and Eve and he said the man shall leave his parents ,cling to his wife and the two shall be one flesh. Now can somebody tel me how a man can be one flesh twined with 3 wives.
Naturally one can never love all the women the same , and naturally the women will be jealous. its in our software, God made it that way. He gave Adam enough love For Eve alone.

Greetings & Happy New Year to all!
Listen Akon is a human being whose opinions are now public. He is a mature ass man who opened a convo that is worth paying a closer look into.
He has made the mistake to make general comments, granted. I hope he realizes that, however it would be ludacris to think that our public figures do not make mistakes. At least this is not a fatale mistake as the ones that i will refrain from spitting our here that more prominent figures are making and affecting thousands if not millions of lives.
I am Senegalese man and expressing my own views, just like Akon was on the show.
Now we all need to grow up and be able to argue our points without insulting our respective levels of intelligence. Akon is A succesful Senegal artist born and raised in Senegal who came to the US in his early teen years. Please do not divulge lies about the man. If you have facts that u can back up; bring them up. Until then Shut the Hell up, I say that respectfully, :)!
I and many people around the world celebrate his success, appreciate his lyrics, and grove to his beats.
Now let's be real, how many people do you know that are faithful to one women and then how many women do u know that is faithful to one man. Not saying they do not exist, but that they exist in both gender but be truthful with your answer.
I have many friends of all nationalities, I have been in france,Italy, lived here for 14 years, all the men I have met in a certain moment or another would fuck around. Many men although not married to many women live a polygamous lifestyle.
Like some said, many Africans are monogamous, my father is one of them. My parents after 30 years of marriage are still together. But I could not guarantee that my parents have been faithful throughout, who can but themselves.
Since a young age, although I had a monogamous state of mind as far as marriage, I had a polygamous lifestyle. And for the sake of space of time I will stop to this point. MOST MAN MAY HAVE A MONOGAMOUS STATE OF MIND BUT HAVE A POLYGAMOUS LIFESTYLE OR TRAINING.

Wow, some of you folks are really ignorant.
How come every African I have ever met always claims to be from a "prominent" family, if Africa is so "prominent", why is it in the sorry shape that its in today??
Alexandra must not go to school and know that there are over 50 different countries in Africa. You should be ashamed to make such an ignorant comment. And the reason why you meet a lot of Africans from prominent families in Africa is usually because they are the only ones who can afford to come to the US. Unless they are apart of special programs, it is very hard to come to the US.

And for the idiot who said most Senegalese are illiterate and didn't even spell the word right...I have nothing to say to you because you are clearly a fool...and that is coming from an educated Jamaican woman.

And by the way, I know plenty of wonderful Muslims and if you people aren't willing to read and educate yourselves enough to know what is going on in the rest of the world...shame on you. Read from non US source of what is going on in IRaq and why or what is goign on in Israel and why? I do not believe in polygamy because I was raised in a monogamous society, but if it works for you, so be it. I know that many men take advantage of the situation, but not all of them. Some actually do it to help out women. I know many educated women who are in polygamous relationships. It was their choice. They can handle it. We must try not to criticize things which we do not understand. Educate yourselves my brothers and sisters.

Ya'll need to stop HATIN' and leave Akon alone. I am an AMERICAN muslim woman who see NOTHING wrong with Polgamy when the husband is fulfilling all his duties to all of his wives. I must admit when I converted to Islam, polygamy was something I had to get used to, but it's part of my religion. Can some females out here today say it is worse than your dude messing around on you behind you back and bringing you home stuff you don't know about like AIDS, which is highest right now among us African American Women. I am not in a polygamous relationship now, if my husband were to bring it up(which I doubt) I would rather know he is with a clean, healthy, safe woman, than some dirty shank he picked up off the corner. Besides the Qur'an has strict guideline that a man must follow to have more than one wife, and clearly states if you can not deal justly with 3 or more than ONLY ONE. If Akon has 3 wives I bet you all of them are happy, and hopefully he is faithful only to them, but now that he has started to blow up, I wonder if he will step out on them, and he he does, it's not those women I would worry about, I would worry about him!

I love Akon for being real and for keeping it real. He is just being honest, He is african and proud. Not because he is living and making money in the USA that he is going to change or abandon his culture. He beleives in poligamy and he gonna practice, if he can't practice in the usa, he still gonna go to africa every summer and practice it. He is from Senegal like i am and we do practice poligamy over there. Nobody is forced to do it, if people choose to be have more than one wife, that is their own choice and the religion we practice and beleive in back it up too. People choose to be gay, people choose not to get married the same way people choose to marry more than one wife. The main thing about it is honesty, before u get married u ask first the woman if she all right with it, if she is not so u are not gonna do it . I love this brother for keepin it real and show u the real african culture y'a ll never had a chance to know and see. Y'all haven't seen nothing yet and he don't give a damn about what y'all thinking. keep it gully Bro senegal is backing u up 100 per cent. Akon never lies about anything at all. He told u from day one that the only reason he was born in America was for him to become citizen and not be confronted with some immigration issues. He is african and Senegalese to the core and he ain't gonna give up his culture, y'all better accep him or leave him alone....he made it and y'all can't stop him no more.. keep it up Brohe doesn't mean thaT all african practice or beleive in it but where he is from they sure practice it and nobody is force to do it , whover can afford it and agree with it can only do it... An one more thing AIDS and HIV rate is very low in Senegal for people who don't know..thanks to the religion practices that does not allow sexual promiscuity and debauchery we usually see on tv . This whole thing is just typical black ghetto trash. White people sit around and laugh at us for stuff like this. Do not talk about the Bible to me and about how GOD says "ITS COOL." LOL. Come on now. The bible was written by a man so of course its gonna be COOL. My grandfather was somewhat like a polygamist and thats why the nigga has over 26 children and they all hate his ass. None of them talk to eachother, and they could give a damn. In that case, a woman should be able to have at least 7-10 husbands since their is more women then there are men. AND DO NOT COME AT ME WITH THAT AMERICAN BLACKS DONT UNDERSTAND POLYGAMIST ASS WAYS AND HOW WE NEED TO PRACTICE IT. YALL SOLD US TO AMERICA FOR TOBACCO AND SUGAR CANE. This is a mans world so of course your with it. THAT JUST SHOWS THAT YOUR MOTHER N FATHERS DID NOT DO THEIR JOB. GET YOUR 4 WIVES IN HELL. i just hope yall do not have daughters. I would never raise my son with that ignorance. And you talk about thats what the muslims and islams practice, but they are the same people that are blowing eachother up, kidnapping and beheading people, and they beat their women in groups if they are seen in public without a man walking in front of them. I do not know why we put up with this crap when there are more of us instead of males. this is why i do not respect men at all.

I think Akon made a speech mistake which is common..
Guys, even presidents, legislators make speech mistakes..I would expect him to rectify and apologize for saying "All" africans...I don't share all his views but I would not take them
    to drama level.
However, I would appreciate Akon to be more genuine and talk about himself as a simple dude, with lots of culture..I'm sure he can bring a lot to the game if he's inspired by the rich senegal cultures/influences. But do it the right way...I'd like him to say, "I'm polygamist, coz I choose to be..and many african people are comfortable with that..Does not means all are. "
Anyway you should ask for his head for making that mistake. Peace

AKON, next time speak to your lived experience as a Muslim Sengalese man. Please don't attempt to speak for all of The Continent because you proved in your interview with Angie Martinez that you can't. With your celebrity platform, I thought you learned the danger of making blanket statements.

Except for those who follow Islam dogmatically, perhaps Akon, you belong to the leagues of African men that revert to the "pologamy is my culture excuse" to justify their infidelity.

The statements you made in this interview, gives us insight to why the rates of AIDS/HIV are so high in Senegal, and in other African countries.

Your lyrics and music make you sound less ignorant...stick to that!

First of all, people need to stop hating on Akon... His album that is going to be coming out on the 21st is going to be tight as hell!!!!!! The only thing he said wrong was "All". A better statement would have been that SOME africans belive in polygamy... Trust me, there is not one african country were polygamy is not practiced...Times may be changing but, that does not mean that it is not practiced...

Some of you are so stupid!!!!!! What if Akon would have Just said "I'm a pimp or playa".... nobody would have said sh*t. (Right) We live in a country where we love the pimps, the playaz aka the dead beat dads. Most of you all have dead beat dads. Most of you need a DNA test to find out who your baby father is. Some of yall Sleep with one partner and then a next, you call it an OPEN RELATIONSHIP. How many women you know that share a baby daddy? Oh thats right they cant find him!!!!! He is ducking his responsibilities. And who are these women who open their legs to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Do you have a friend like that? Is she a polygamist? or What about the Girlfriend you know thats sleeping with the married man. Is she a polygamist? and the dead beat dad with 4 baby mama's. Is he a Polygamist? What about the daters, you know the people who date multiple people at the same time (forever). Is that polygamy? Oh yea You know who we really love Hugh Hefner ( The Playboy Guy) how many bunnies do he have? But thats not polygamy is you just Fu*k em and dont marry them, RIGHT.
By the way isn't there a ratio of women to men 5 to 1 some say 7-1 im not really sure what it is, But i Know every woman is waiting for her night is shining armor. Add up all the dead beat, Gay men, men in Prison, and the niccas thats not ballers some of yall women will be waiting for a long time. So long you might get into a polygamist relationship with a pimp, a playa, or a married man. Some of us are lucky to find that one special person, out of all the illresponseable and unmoral people out their ( Male and Female) but those who dont will alway playa hate on our relationships. Go and pick up that Konvicted 11-21-06 stop playing games, Akon I Got ya back!!! sometime you cant keep it to real with some folks They like the lies better, cause they are living a lie. • Mr Cherry:

I will not allow this wise brother known as AKON who has enough $$ to support his separate households. There are households around the country being run by single woman and no man for the children to identify with as a father. The haters were quick to demonize this brother for expanding his intelligence on multiple types of relationships. AKON I respect your ability to be to true to yourself despite the consequences when you are standing for truth and social justice. Polygamy is a state issue and I believe that a religious freedom is a federal issue.

There are many who would ask, I imagine why a woman would choose polygamy? It might be a good deal for a man, many might suppose, but why would a woman choose to share her husband with another woman or women and choose to be a polygamous wife? Why settle for the imagined subjugation, exploitation and degradation?

There are many myths and untruths about the polygamous lifestyle, and there are many different forms and practical applications of the theory. There is no "Rule Book for Polygamous Marriage" that lays down the structure and form of the practice. One guide we have is the Bible, the Holy Word of God, which should guide and enlighten Christian's as they strive to be obedient to God's will for their lives.

It is, historically, a form of marriage which has been practiced all over the world, and which is much more prevalent than monogamy. It is also a form of marriage which has taken on a particularly bad connotation in Western European culture, especially in the United States. What is it about this lifestyle that raises such emotion and criticism? At a time when homosexual marriage is becoming more and more accepted, what is the problem with polygamy?

One of the problems is the untruths and misconceptions that form our popular cultural idea of what polygamy is. Women achieve more freedom and expanded horizons than in monogamy. Why? There are two or more to share the housework, the cooking, the childcare, freeing each one to have more time to herself to pursue independent goals and objectives. Women are as free as they choose to speak their minds. If women are kept silent, that is the problem of the individuals involved, women as well as men, not the form of marriage. Exploitation and subjugation may occur in some situations, but that also occurs in monogamous marriages. The form of marriage is not the problem - the individuals involved in the marriage and their attitudes are the problem. A polygamous marriage based on Biblical truths and precepts, as all marriages should be, should meet the same standards as any monogamous marriage. Husbands should love their wives, and wives should be obedient & submissive to their husbands, based on Biblical principles.

To those who would argue that polygamy makes women dependent, I would say from experience that just the opposite is true. A woman married to a man with other wives is forced to have a very strong sense of who she is, what she's doing, and why she is doing it, and must maintain her own sense of identity. Her identity cannot be wrapped up in her husband's identity, the way many women in monogamous marriages become, simply because her husband isn't always there. And for an independent woman, that's one of the advantages. There is free time and energy to spend as one chooses. There is a built-in set of companions and friends for fellowship, for sharing work as well as play, and for help and caring. God brings people together in a family for reasons that are beneficial to each person-and so out of every relationship in the family we can learn and grow.

Polygamy is not for everyone. As long as every individual gets the time, energy, caring and compassion he or she requires, what is the problem with a man having more than one wife? As our society has encouraged women to make independent choices, and individuals to fulfill their own unique potential, if a woman chooses polygamy, does anyone have the right to tell her she cannot make that choice? Abuse and exploitation should not be tolerated, as they should not be tolerated anywhere in our society. Polygamy is not abuse. It is a lifestyle ordained by God for some people.

Examine the Bible. There is nowhere that polygamy is preached against. It was not only common in the Old Testament; it was a common practice in Jewish culture at the time of Christ. Monogamy was only brought to the Jewish world by Roman civilization (which was widely known as being morally corrupt with slavery, endless war, barbaric entertainment, & sexual orgies), which. Yet if such a common practice was wrong, why did Christ not preach against it, as He did against all the other wrongs of His day? Polygamy is not for everyone. But for some it is God's calling and God's special blessing. It must be based on Gods core principles and lived in obedience to God's will, as any monogamous marriage must be. It certainly has its problems and pitfalls, as does any marriage particularly when it is not a lifestyle that we are trained in this culture to live. It is a lifestyle that provides much love, fellowship, support and growth in one's walk with the Lord. To those whom God has called, it is a special treasure.

    Benefits For Women

Automatic childcare in a sexist society gives women more effective choice to have a career without devaluing the role of homemaker.

Being able to marry men who are already married means that women can marry men who have already proved themselves, therefore minimizing their risk.

Being able to marry the men who attract most women means they don't have to settle just for what's left after other women have the best pickings.

Having the possibility that a husband can remarry without divorce extends practical security to a woman. She needn't worry about losing her husband and income as she loses her looks, because if her husband is attracted by a younger woman, he doesn't even have to think about leaving his wife.

Polygamy removes the pressure on a husband to commit adultery, and removes damaging deceit from a marriage.

Polygamy provides a method where a woman can have a female friend for life as well as a husband.

Polygamy therefore provides more people and a better chance of meeting diverse needs.

Polygamy provides a potential for at least three adult incomes, reducing state dependence and the fear of unemployment.

    Controls Placed On Men

If a man wants to have another sexual partner in a polygamous system then he has to meet his responsibilities - pay for any children produced from all his relationships without priority being given to those from a 'legal' relationship.

Polygamy removes or reduces the seduction of innocent young women - If a man promises to marry her, he cannot use his existing marriage as an excuse for not fulfilling a promise.

Polygamy reduces the number of women who are available. Currently, with more women than men, this 'cheapens' women. With less women available their 'value' goes up. In other words, polygamy makes men have to try harder and do better with women if they are to win them in competition with other men.

As a person of West African descent, i'm hurt and appalled by Akon's assertions and generalization. To say that ALL African men believe in polygamy is not only fallacious but also very dangerous... I'm from Ghana born and raised I have lived or visited 3 to 4 West African countries I know of only two men (and i'm only talking about my father's generation which should be the same as Akon's father) who have 2 wives and not more and they don't even live in the same house with each other AND those men ARE muslim and according to their laws they are allowed up to 4... So you can imagine how "acceptable" polygamy is among my father's peers let's not even begin to talk about my peers (I fall in the 28-35 range) my friends happily have their plates full with ONE single woman... I'm ashamed of AKON today. never saw this coming...
