It was a worthy experiment that provided independent Game Developers an opportunity to express themselves and garner a little exposure that might lead to unexpected success. Now, the experiment has come to an end. iGaming software provider Odobo has unexpectedly announced they will be shutting down operations effective May 31, 2016. The offices will remain open until June 10 in order to allow company employees to close up any loose ends.
Odobo’s Open Software Platform
As part of its charter, Odobo spent the last five years developing a unique marketplace concept. By providing access to an Open Software Platform, any upstart iGaming software developer with a vision and talent was given the opportunity to get its vision and games out into the online casino market. Through Odobo’s marketing efforts, those games were able to find a home with dozens of online casino sites that are currently being operated by some of the world’s top site operators.
Odobo’s closing represents a serious blow to those game Developers that might have been on the cusp of being discovered. It’s also a serious blow to an industry that desperately needs a way for smaller developers to find a way into one of the most competitive industries on the Internet. Perhaps as one door closes, another one might open somewhere down the line.
The weakness the Odobo company officials found in their concept was the inability to stay up with costs against the backdrop of a highly regulated industry that has been growing at a rapid pace since the start of the decade. Ironically, it was the costs the company was willing to absorb on behalf of the game developers that apparently led to the company’s downfall. While the game developers were benefiting from the economies of scale provided by Odobo’s Business Model, Odobo was unable to scale the business model fast enough to stay up with the associated costs.
On the Odobo’s official website, the only thing that is left is a message to all concerned parties. The message closes with “We are proud of what we have achieved together and are grateful to the investors, developers, operators and suppliers who have been part of our journey,” adding “Thank you all for your support.”
