Themed list: Ow, my heart.

Tags: film drugs heart

I really enjoyed writing the last themed post, it made it a lot easier to do varied films, so I’m going to make it a regular thing. The theme this time: Ow, my Heart. This will be any films that made my heart hurt. I’ve already covered a few in full reviews like Martyrs and An American Crime, so I won’t be repeating any.

Requiem For a Dream.

Oh the Drugs. The unhealthy use and abuse of drugs. The neglectful distribution of drugs. The harmful social, physical, and mental affects of drugs. Delusions, infections, amputations. The fear and confusion that comes with it all. The horrible withdrawal and what can be loosely labelled as treatment. Oh the tears and the sadness.

This whole film is a violent roller-coaster that ironically never really reaches a high for the audience but can still come crashing down so far that you ask yourself why you are putting yourself through this.

If those scary anti-drug PSAs didn’t put you off of drugs, then this film sure as hell should. It’s just so sad. It’s an honest, heartbreaking, and oddly vibrant look at the different affects that various drugs can have on widely different characters. And it’s so sad. So here it lies.

Obviously I’m not talking about the entire film here. I’m talking about the short story at the beginning that brought us all to tears. It’s a really weird thing to put at the start of a Disney film. It’s a little more of a Pixar thing to do, but even then it’s pretty intense. It’s a beautifully heartbreaking look two people’s entire live summarised in ten minutes.

But unlike everything else on this list, at least it doesn’t break your heart and leave, it does give you some pretty solid closure in the rest of the film.

Million Dollar Baby.

This film. Oh my heart, this film.

Basically: Happy, happy, happy, really happy, super happy, wait what just happened? oh no. Ow. Ow. OW. Why won’t you stop hurting me???

Amazing cast. Amazing story. Amazing film. Bring tissues.

So that’s it for this list! If you’d like to see more of this kind of thing then sit patiently, I’ll likely do more soon.

See you there.
