Review – Captain America : Civil War

Bursting onto the screens across the planet is the latest Film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Captain America : Civil War – A film that is in many ways a mix of Captain America 3, Iron Man 4 and The Avengers 3. Its screenplay is by the combination of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who have penned the previous Cap films and also Thor : The Dark World), and the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony), who helmed Captain America : The Winter Soldier.

What is, for me, without doubt the film that affords the lead actors the most ability to

The team finds themselves reeling from a mission in Lagos that ends badly and under significant pressure from across the world to shift to a means of governance and accountability leading to divisions in the team. Combining this with a mysterious outsider attempted to discover the secrets of Cap’s friend Bucky and the programme that created the Winter Soldier.

Thats all I will say about the storyline itself.

This is easily one of the best films within the Marvel Universe, and I can’t rule out it being the best at this point (but feel as though I need some reflection time before committing to that). It affords the actors opportunity for emotional, engaging performances than a number of its predecessors and works hard to bring internal motivations of the lead roles to the fore. Robert Downey Jnr especially delivers a Performance beyond his traditional charisma fuelled Stark act.

A film that reflects on the consequences of the team’s actions whilst delivering a feel that throughout seems weighted towards a old fashioned international spy thriller.  There are a number of funny moments but there’s also the feeling throughout of watching characters in conflict that you’ve become invested in.

Additionally to well known characters, we see introductions of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the much hailed new Spiderman performance by brit Tom Holland, whose performance sets the first Spiderman film that he features in, up for very big business.

Don’t get me wrong, if you don’t like Marvel films, then this has nothing for you. But if you do, you’re in for a treat. An absolute treat.

9/10
