Remember that brilliant shot in the Batman V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer where Ben Affleck stares at a Robin costume with the spray painted message from Joker?
If you haven’t seen BATMAN V SUPERMAN then spoiler, that’s the only hint we actually get in the film for Robin’s fate. It’s clear something went on but we don’t know as to which Robin it was that met a grizzly fate with Joker, however, now Zack Snyder has decided to shed some light as to why we got that scene.
“In my mind, it was that Robin had died 10 years earlier, during some run in with a young Joker (Jared Leto). To me, it was a fun backstory there to play with. The whole idea was that there had been loss and sacrifice. In a weird way, he scarified everything to be Batman, right? He doesn’t really have a life outside of the cave. I thought by including Robin — a dead Robin — it would help us understand he’s been on quite a little journey.”
Still, we don’t know which Robin, however, we’d presume it would be Jason Todd who was murdered in the Death In The Family storyline during the 80’s when fans voted for Todd, the Robin of the time, to be killed off, only to have him return in the 2000’s as the Red Hood.
Although it makes sense why Batman is perhaps the way he is in the film, it didn’t really show too well in the one scene we got, although was Affleck’s comment on seeing heroes turn bad a throw to Jason Todd being Red Hood as well?
