David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE Dragon Tattoo was released with much acclaim five years ago, with talk of a sequel being constant but fruitless and seemingly everyone moving along. Now, EVIL DEAD and DON’T BREATHE director Fede Alvarez has emerged as the director of THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB.
The films, based upon Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium Trilogy series, themselves adapted in Swedish with Noomi Rapace as the lead, follow Lisbeth Salander, played by Rooney Mara in Fincher’s film. This proposed sequel, however, isn’t written by Larsson but was penned by David Lagercrantz and sends Salander and Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) on a new adventure. Specifically, a web of espionage that deals with cybercriminals and villainy that threatens their lives.
It looks as if Sony has decided to move away from The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest in favour of moving in a fresh direction. Mara is linked to return but has plenty on her plate at the moment and word on a potential return for Craig is unknown at this time.
