Man Bites Dog Movie Summary

C’est arrivé près de chez vous or as they say in ‘Murican, Man Bites Dog, is a French film written by Rémy Belvaux, directed by Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde. It stars the three men as well – talk about a vanity project! It was released on September 12, 1992 at the Toronto Film Festival and then a month later in NYC.

The film documents the adventures of the very charming French serial killer, Ben, by a group of film students. It’s your standard university-type black and white film where we learn all about Ben’s life from his sweet working class family at the shop they own. The good boy they know is a stark contrast with the misogynistic xenophobe Ben really is.

Along the way, we learn how Ben picks the people he kills, watch him ruthlessly kill them, and casually dispose of the bodies. Along the way, the film crew gets drawn into the lifestyle as they go from documenters to participants in rape and murder.

In the end, Ben’s killing catches up with him and he is jailed for murder. He escapes, but finds his entire family and girlfriend have been killed by the brother of a victim he killed. As Ben plans his next move, he and the film crew too are killed one after the other by this man. The camera falls to the ground and captures the recordist getting shot in the back and falling to the ground.

The film grossed $206,000 domestically, and won the SACD award at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival for Best Feature and the Special Award of the Youth for directors Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde. Rotten Tomatoes critics give it a 75% and audiences give it a 91%.
