What a great evening. Thursday November 26th, Hudson’s Bay hosted a brilliant charity shopping event in support of St. Paul’s Hospital’s Foundation “Lights of Hope” campaign. The Foundation’s Chair Don Kasian kick started the event explaining that funds raised would go towards acquiring life saving equipment for the hospital.
Celebrity chef David Hawksworth, incidentally born at St Paul’s, followed up by deftly demonstrating first a pork belly rillette with cranberry preserve then a roasted squash and wild mushroom tart. I wouldn’t have dreamt of trying these at home until he made it look so easy, along with the help of his distributed recipes. A couple of years back I had perhaps my most memorable meal at David’s eponymous restaurant, Hawksworth, which this night served non-stop tasty bites accompanied by wine throughout the 2nd and 5th floors of the Bay.
Next up was television personality and stylist Brad Goreski, introduced by Mana Mansour, award-winning broadcast host and producer. Brad showed us twelve party looks using fashions from the Bay’s 2nd floor. Metallic, transparent, feathers, fringe (is in according to Brad), graphic, faux fur, lace, velvet, red, cranberry and even white shared the stage. Luxe clutches, jewelry and fancy shoes with rhinestones, jewels, metal and ties presented a polished finish.
Lauren Mote rounded up the night with a lively presentation and recipes for two of her complex signature drinks. Turtle dove is a surprising concoction of gin, sherry, ginger and nutmeg syrup, lemon juice, rhubarb bitters, sparkling wine. Nochebuena is a fragrant mix of rum, grand marnier, vermouth, all spice syrup and celery bitters. Lauren even makes her own bitters mixes and syrups.
For that evening Hudson’s Bay discounted purchases and donated 10% of the proceeds to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation. But by the time the engaging events were done, there really wasn’t any time to shop. Because the of the great effort The Bay put into the wonderful program I for one plan to donate to the “Lights of Hope” on line.
