Revisiting ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ 10 Years Later

It’s been 10 years since The Devil Wears Prada was released, and if you’ve forgotten, it’s that one where Anne Hathaway plays a stylishly unstylish young woman who takes a job for fashion diva and all-around-not-pleasant-to-work-for (read: bitch) Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, which earned her one of her 243 Oscar nominations. The Movie also put Emily Blunt on the map.

Naturally, the movie has been re-released on Blu-ray and DVD in a “10th Anniversary Edition,” which gave me the opportunity to revisit the comedy and see how it holds up. In my original movie review, I called it “consistently entertaining,” though noted that Hathaway and Streep play off well together, but more so “in the first half.” I also said it “could have been funnier.”

All three statements hold true, for the most part. Streep is terrific, Hathaway is just right for the role and Emily Blunt is arguably the best among the bunch. The movie is humorous, but more in a chuckle-and-be-amused kind of way than the desired, laugh-out-loud variety. And the first half is notably better than the second half.

I almost always multitask when watching movies at home–I just can’t help it–but realized at the end that I had paid close attention to much of the first half of the movie and ignored large chunks of the second. The sparring between Hathaway and Streep in the first half is to die for, but as the film shifts gears, it begins to lose its purpose for being.

All in all, The Devil Wears Prada holds up pretty well, but it’s not quite as good as I remembered.

The new 10th Anniversary Edition includes:

  • Audio Commentary with Director David Frankel, Producer Wendy Finerman, Costume Designer Patricia Field, Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, Editor Mark Livolsi and Director of Photography Florian Ballhaus
  • Deleted Scenes with Director and Editor Commentary
  • Gag Reel
  • Trivia Track
