Hot Docs 2017: Bill Nye: Science Guy

The former children's show host fights back against the anti-science movement in Bill Nye: Science Guy. In the 1990s, Bill Nye was best known as the host of the children's science show Bill Nye, the Science Guy, which was shown in classrooms all around the world. After being out of the spotlight for many years, Bill Nye reentered the public eye, as he faced off against those who deny evolution and climate change. This results in scrutiny over Bill Nye's lack of credibility as a scientist.

As he doesn't hold a PhD, Bill Nye is technology not an actually scientist and is instead, as he describes it, "an engineer who took a lot of physics classes." However, Bill Nye was viewed by an entire generation as the science teacher we always wanted and he becomes disturbed when individuals such as creationist Ken Ham or meteorologist Joe Bastardi speak out against scientific facts. This results in Bill Nye putting it upon himself to be the voice of reason in the rise of the anti-science movement.

In many ways, Bill Nye: Science Guy is a film about Bill Nye trying to legitimize himself as a science expert, despite being criticized over his lack of credentials. One ways he seeks to achieve this is through his role as CEO of The Planetary Society, founded by Bill Nye's idol Carl Sagen, which is working on developing solar sails to launch into space. Will the film also featuring appearances from the likes of astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and climatologist Michael E. Mann, Bill Nye: Science Guy is ultimately a celebration of science and how we shouldn't allow deniers to dilute the undisputed facts of evolution and climate change.
