Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump) may have produced one of his best works. Written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Taboo), Allied is a romantic thriller set amidst World War II. In 1942, Max Vatan (Brad Pitt), an intelligence officer encounters Marianne Beauséjour (Marion Cotillard), a female French Resistance fighter on an undercover mission behind enemy lines. As the pair fall in love and start a family, it is brought to Vatan’s attention that the mother of his child may be a German spy.
The trailer showcases a film crafted with the highest quality in all aspects and a story ridden with suspicion and paranoia featuring Cotillard handling a gun with ease in a layered role we aren’t used to seeing her in. The cast is completed by Jared Harris, Simon McBurney, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Betts and August Diehl who appeared alongside Pitt in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009), where he must have acquired a taste for killing Nazis. Allied is set to be released theatrically in the UK next week. You can watch the trailer below.
